Please God, I do NOT want to LIKE Stephen A. Smith...

STEPHEN A. SMITH: I have profound respect for the iconic figure that is Jim Brown, what he's done in the sports world, the political conscience that is attached to him. But what he said, I deem inappropriate. I thought it was wrong, and more importantly, I thought it highlighted something, Skip, that I told you many, many years ago -- I mean many shows ago. Actually, not that many shows ago.

When it comes to the African-American community, you have a plethora of individuals. For example, the black population hasn't given the Republican Party more than 15% of its vote since 1964. And anybody who is deemed a black conservative, I am not one of them -- I'm a registered Independent, just to get that out of the way -- but those that I know who are black conservatives are considered pariahs and are ostracized in our communities and it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

But this is how -- this is a problem that exists within our community. Because you are from our community, everybody believes that everybody is supposed to be identical to one another and we can't display or exercise any kind of versatility, alright, or range in our thinking. It's a problem that we have to deal with. It's an internal problem that exists and we're going to have to handle it because if we don't we're gonna see more Jim Brown's speaking out against more Kobe Bryant's and we're gonna see more Kobe Bryant's retaliating against the likes of Jim Brown. (via MFP)
Hate to say it, but he is spot ON with these comments. Good for him for stepping up. Of course now HE will be ostracized...

He is racists. His comments don't count. I will change the radio station or TV program if he comes on.

He is a very sharp guy. And people that know him speak highly of him.

I hate is "pissed-off", on-air, persona. And the pace of his speech. And the accent.

But I'm rarely in disagreement with what he says.

This. The way he acts on TV makes me want to dislike him, but I can't say I disagree with what he says most of the time.

Sounds like Jim Brown is just expressing sour grapes that not everyone wants to be a pariah like he was/is. Favorite targets Kobe, Tiger and Jordan have all had their share of the spotlight off the court already for other issues and their credibility as coming out for some cause Brown deems "their responsibility as an athlete" is somewhat eroded.

FTR, I agree with Smith on this, but these guys would IMHO erode their earnings potential by coming out strongly on one side of some social issue. Brown doesn't care, the others likely do. You can live by example without taking some huge public stance like Brown chooses to do - his star fizzled out years ago and he's trying to remain relevant. :twocents:

Wasn't Jordan who reasoned, "Republicans buy shoes too?" Jordan is too smart to pull a "Jim Brown." Brown has a tendency to come off as self-serving in picking issues, whereas Jordan makes no bones about self-serving when it comes to profit.

Some folks are interested in social change
Some folks are interested in more money

Jim Brown just needs to deal with it... However: I think he's right to express his concerns in general but I wouldn't expect Jordan and Bryant to do anything different / and who would..?

IMO, Smith isn't "Ghetto." Smith acts exactly like every bombastic white sports dork on TV, which is why racists/conks like Z and Grizzinhaledick hate him.
