Pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson will pay $2.2 billion to the U.S. government to end civil and criminal investigations into kickbacks to pharmacists and the marketing of pharmaceuticals for off-label uses, a person familiar with the settlement said on Monday.

The settlement with the company and its subsidiaries covers the marketing of schizophrenia treatment Risperdal and of heart drug Natrecor, said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Risperdal is sold by J&J unit Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc, which is expected to plead guilty to misdemeanor allegations of mis-branding, the source said.

J&J, the maker of Band-Aids, disclosed in a securities filing in 2011 it had reached an agreement to resolve criminal penalties related to the promotion of Risperdal, a one-time big-selling product for the company, but that certain issues remained open.

Attorney General Eric Holder was scheduled to speak about the settlement at a news conference at the U.S. Justice Department later.

From at least 1999 through 2005, J&J and Janssen promoted Risperdal for such unapproved uses :ohno: :ohno: :ohno: as controlling aggression in elderly dementia patients and treating behavioral disturbances in children, according to the complaint.

The off-label marketing caused U.S. government insurance programs to pay hundreds of millions of dollars for uncovered claims, the complaint said

Re-read that last item there, Conks. In case you can't, I highlighted it in red.

You bitch about government waste and over-regulation, yet, here are your fucking buddies defrauding the government and causing them to waste money.

And, also, you shit on Eric Holder constantly.... Seems like the fucker's earning his salary defending us from you predatory cocksuckers.

Capitalism - our friend, indeed.

P.S. Good morning, guys.

So, let me see if I got this straight: Johnson & Johnson, for NINE years, promoted a drug for unapproved uses. And for NINE years the GOVERNMENT (FDA) didn't catch them? And somehow, because of this, it's CONKS' fault that the government was paying uncovered medical claims?

Yep. Makes perfect sense....I'm sure it couldn't have anything to do with the ineptitude of the FDA and Medicare.

Welcome to the wonderful world of psychiatric drugs. They are gradually being used to treat a broader and broader spectrum of problems. I believe it is mostly conks who have been saying that ritalin has been overprescribed and has become more a means of "mental cosmetics" than dealing with a real problem.

As I have said before, psychiatry is the only branch of medicine where you can legally treat a condition where the pathology is poorly or not at all understood based on highly subjective tests that can't be validated. Just give someone a psychoactive substance and if it appears to fix the symptoms with no side effects in the short term, it goes to market.

You won't get any argument from me about more tightly regulating psychiatric drugs and who can get them.

What a fucking joke.
Exactly what "regulation" is needed? Sounds like there IS a "regulation" in place that the government is just now getting around to enforce to the tune of $2.2 billion. Please tell me what "regulation" you would propose to prevent this?

And that is out number 3. For the Conks, 4 runs on 5 hits. There were no errors and one man left on base. After one inning of play in this week's game, it's the Conks 4, the Donks nothing. We'll be back after a word from our sponsors.

That's right. We'd be MUCH better off without the pharmaceutical companies.

Not.
