The head landscaper and grounds keeper for the White House, Jim "Whitey" Bealles, was dismissed abruptly this morning after 31 years of loyal service to Presidents and First Ladies from both sides of the aisle.
In an exclusive interview just outside the gates of the White House, Mr. Bealles' and his attorney condemned the firing in the strongest of terms and presented his version of the events.
"It all happened so fast, I'm in a daze," said the obviously shaken Bealles. "All I know is that I was just outside the Oval Office Window getting ready to weed the Rose Garden just like I do every week, and I shouted out to my help, 'Has anybody seen the spade and the hoe?' And just that quick, the Secret Service showed up, handcuffed me, and led me off."
Charges are pending a thorough investigation. Stay tuned for further developments.
