So much for 1st amendment rights...

What's hysterical is:
The same "strict constitutional conservatives" on this site
who worship the 2nd amendment don't seem to mind when the 1st amendment is violated....
Particularly if it's against a Non-violent peaceful protester

On the evening of August 30th, Emily Yates, an Iraq war veteran, was just illegally arrested, choked and brutalized by park police at Independence Mall in Philadelphia. She was not engaged in any illegal activity and was not told why she was being attacked. While she was busy playing a song, park rangers accosted her. When she demanded an explanation for their aggression, they pinned her first to a park bench then to the pavement for an extended period before dragging her off to the Philadelphia Federal Detention Center...

On a serious note, I have nothing against free speech. You can watch the video here:

http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=3bf_1378009165

I didn't watch the whole thing, just the first little bit. It sounds like she was in a closed area and the Park Rangers seemed pretty patient to start with to me. She wanted a confrontation. :twocents:

I am all for freedom of speech and the right to bear arms, you can't have one with out the other. :thumb:

She wanted a confrontation and got it...

this is no different than the veteran who moved into a community, signed the HOA covenant that prohibits multiple flags...then puts up multiple flags and claims the community is anti-American...its crap...

She was told to leave by lawful authorities...she refused...

Same as the guy who videotaped his loading a shotgun in downtown Washington...and then posted it, challenging the police...and is now in jail...he wanted a confrontation, and got it...

Some laws suck...and you have to make a choice...obey, or not...and accept the consequences...

I don't argue that point...but when a law enforcement officer tells you you have to move...you have two choices...do it, or eventually get what she got...

The charge could be failure to follow a lawful order...which may get tossed in court...may not...

If she was trying to get a confrontation for a certain point, than she succeeded...

If she thought her status (female/veteran) could get the cops to back off...she misjudged...

As with everything, stand up for your position and accept the consequences...or back down and reattack another day...

But at what point is a banjo playing hippie in the park
constitute a violent physical confrontational arrest worthy?

This is just STUPID / no two ways around it...
Stupid Hippie and even more Stupid police officers
Police shouldn't be "the stupid ones" and yet so frequently are (frankly it's amazing)

Oh I won't argue who has the hammer in the initial confrontation. Right or wrong. Just looking at the larger picture here.

Assuming for a moment she was WRONG to be there...at what point do the cops simply walk away and let her break the law/orders???

Not good for an organization built on compliant citizens...to back away from a banjo playing hippie...

Listen, they most likely over-reacted...so did she...

Great video for the you-tubers...interesting discussion...

Not a real big deal, in the grand scheme of things IMHO...

Come on Chiz...those ignorant hippies were itching for a confrontation.

What a bunch of dumb, ignorant whack jobs. Once the police arrested her, they all went ballistic with their "police state", and, "you're hurting/chocking/violating her" garbage.

Look, if you want to get arrested, then get arrested. You only make yourself look foolish if you struggle while screaming about being hurt. :dunce: Duh.

Note the idiot in the video saying something about, "if you take her, you take me"...all the while not moving forward to get taken.     Chump probably went home telling everyone he was a hero because the police were too afraid to take him down. :tothehand:

If a police officer tells you to leave an area...leave. That really isn't hard to understand.

If you don't like it, tell a politician or a lawyer and get the rule changed or the police officer reeducated for his mistake, or suspended for his behavior.

But, to purposefully engage in a confrontation, and then whine about being confronted, is ridiculous.

Anything other than that is a runaway police force in my opinion

Peacefulness = Peacefulness / Always
any other formula is straight up bullsh!t
They should have simply stood their (period) and that's all (Period)

Maybe you should address the issue with whomever came up with squatting or nuisance ordinances in public parks.

Usually that's your friendly neighborhood city council.

And more times than not, they're responding to the quality of life a$$hole citizens that are a carbuncle on the a$$ of every city council everywhere. They come in two flavors: JSO, and SK. Activist types. Uptight about everything, including people sullying up the public parks.

Then the police enforce the ordinances and who are the first people to get uptight about it?

The activist a$$holes.

The police aren't writing the laws. And I'm sure they'd be happy to refund you your nickel

With public complaints, the age of digital video, and mandatory arrest laws? They have very little discretion anymore.

Damn shame the way these union pigs treat the very veterans who make it possible for us to sleep safely every night in 'merica. :ohno:

You've lost your mind if you think:
"A police officer says move so you move..." Bullsh!t
Uh, the police do not work for you. Where do you come up with such complete bvllsh!t?

Seriously, if I want a police officer to arrest you for being stupid, can the officer arrest you? And what if you want the officer to arrest me for being smart...can the officer do that?

Of course not. They don't work for you or me.

The police work to enforce laws that...as others have pointed out...that the general public, of which you are part, have put in place.

Thus, we are back to my point that you conveniently didn't address in your response. Don't like the laws or the police officers behavior? Change the laws or challenge the behavior formally through the system in which YOU, as a citizen of the country, state, town, live.

It really is that simple.

Unfortunately, we have a bunch of preschool-minded hippies, with no patience and no common sense, that don't want to engage in a respectful conversation about such things. They'd rather go perch somewhere, usually without a permit, to interfere with the rest of society's daily lives (as boring and/or capitalistic as that can be), in order to call attention to their, "life's not fair" plight of the week. They look for a confrontation, get one, and then complain that they were confronted.

Watch the video. A bunch of big, bad, hippie clowns (most of whom would get their asses kicked in by anyone who eats meat or played on any youth athletic team) calling the park police a bunch of names and trying to goad them into action. One lady is screaming, "you're choking/hurting her", when clearly the lady in custody is still screaming (not being choked) and kicking the officers (and the officers were NOT hurting her - except for the uncomfortable position of being put into handcuffs while resisting arrest - and they repeatedly asked her to stop kicking them).

Pathetic.

Most of them probably didn't bother to vote...and those that did voted for Obama - the very leader whose actions got them to protest in the park in the first place. Straight up karma.

Go to your protest, enjoy the air, get your views out in the open, and then go home and organize and that bunch of people to contact your local political leader and work to change the laws. Otherwise, I have no sympathy for people who intentionally and disingenuously set themselves, and others, up for a confrontation under the guise that they are just nice people there to be "peaceful." Bullshvt. :tothehand:
