I came across an Aldous Huxley quote that really reasonates with me:

“The spiritual journey does not consist of arriving at a new destination where a person gains what they did not have, or becomes what they are not. It consists in the dissipation of one’s own ignorance concerning oneself and life, and the gradual growth of that understanding which begins the spiritual awakening. The finding of God is a coming to one’s self.”

Is this atheistic?

First of all, I will say that I believe that “God” is concept that exists somewhere outside the realm of human understanding. I think people have a strong tendency to personify and attribute human characteristics to “God” to better relate to whatever is out there.

If we think of “God” as “Truth”, which may be as close as our feeble minds can get to an understanding of a higher power, then Huxley is acknowledging the existence of God in this quote and it is clearly not at all atheistic.

I don't think it's necessarily atheistic, but rather an acknowledgement that spirituality or the concept of God are up to the individual to interpret. There are a lot of people who wouldn't consider themselves religious that would consider themselves to be spiritual, i.e. believing in something greater than themselves. For me, the older I get the more I find myself thinking "what's this all about?".

I would say it's a deistic message than an atheist message. What he is saying is that don't let charlatans and hypocrites in too many organized religions speak for God.

Sounds like a person with a belief in a higher power, who or whatever you choose to call it. Spiritual awakening is realizing that higher power and that you are not that higher power.

Our education system (with its warts and all) has done some interesting things lately
The more lively and intellectual middle schoolers have emerged from our system understanding that

a) Christianity is not anywhere in our Constitution
b) There were a multitude of religions BEFORE Jesus
c) and each person should decide for themselves

McCarthy fought hard but it looks like he lost reasonable intellectual discourse has returned

My point:
A whole slew of these middle schoolers
are absolutely fascinated with the Greek Gods and the associated mythology

Frankly that warms my heart

Not atheistic IMO. More mystical and transcendent than most western conceptions of god and the spiritual, but not atheistic.

I believe in God. He looks like me; maybe little taller, but not as handsome, and definitely not as good with women - I once juggled 3 girlfriends at once. Even God couldn't do that, and he had another two/thirds of a holy trinity to back him up.

All organized religions are human eventions that are populated by humans and therefore limited and flawed, thus by definition lacking in the whole truth.

God by definition is unlimited and total truth, beyond limited human understanding.

By taking the leap of faith to what we humans cannot fully understand to God, then we do find ourselves in the total truth of God.

To let the failings of humans in organized religions limit you and keep you from the truth as found in God is illogical, for you too are limited and flawed.

The search for God is a search for truth and an individual endeavor. The grouping together of somewhat like minded individuals in organized religions to practice their beliefs within their human context is flawed, as are all human endeavors.

I see it as a clear atheistic quote by Huxley. "The finding of God is a coming to one’s self” reminds me of another quote, "[Humans] are a way for the cosmos to know itself."
