"As my parents used to say: 'If you don’t respect yourself, no one else will.'"
He was lucky to have parents with this kind of wisdom. Children having children are rarely possessed of such wisdom.

Good article, and spot on. Seems that too many black youth believe that their ticket out of a bad predicament is through becoming a great athlete or a rapper/hip hop artist. That's all well and good if you have the talent, but the problem is that everybody else wants the same thing. Education is no guarantee of a better life, but if I were a betting man I'd wager on the side of getting my diploma vs. becoming the next 50 cent or Lebron.

What a great article. Sadly, he'll be labeled as a sell out or an Uncle Tom by the black community.

It's always sad when that happens. It's easier it seems to support foolishness than it is to actually hold one's self accountable for their own lives.
"It's the Man's fault!"
No, dumbass, its YOUR OWN fault!
"The Man is flooding the black community with drugs to keep us down!"
Then why is your dumbass using and/or selling them then? Why aren't you taking a stand and driving it OUT of the community?
I'll tell you why. Because its easier to blame the police and the media.

He left out one big driver of the dysfunction, which is the illegitimate birth rate in the black community.
The lack of role models he speaks about directly correlates to the lack of fatherhood.

How am I a republican? And how am I a "wannabe Marine?" Because I disagree with you? You need to find Jesus. You may agree with this author but your statements have sided with all the blacks that saw a black boy shot and nothing more. You ignore the lack of facts and made a judgement that because he was black he must've been profiled and the person that killed him was a racists.
I'm neither Republican or Democrat. Both parties are full of crap.

AZ retired as an officer, Commander if I recall correctly. I doubt you retired and if you did, you were higher than that.
