Can't believe I voted for this loon in 2008. Why the fuck is he holding a press conference for the Martin thing? Way to create a greater racial divide. Most Presidents wouldn't comment on these issues.

There are no facts in the case, therefore, only not guily can be found. Next.

:notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: 100% agreed :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:

Charles Barkley actually has had the best commentary on this I've seen - HE should be President.

Yup. CB said it best. It sucks what happened but facts are needed not assumptions.

As fun as it is to go on this site and stir up the sh!t
and as much as I hate to get to the bottom line on anything (because that kills the game)

Although I don't think President Obama should have commented on the case, a simple "I believe in our justice system" would have probably been better considering he's a politician. But hey, if what he said is the opinion he wants to project to the public, then so be it.

I would have voted for Barkley before this happened. He is a cool mofo to talk with.

I agree. I think a comment was due because of the pressure thats been created. However, I think it should have been more genreal.

Imagine if Clinton had commented on OJ (and maybe he did, I dunno I was a kid) and said Nicole was like his daughter.

I had forgotten about how fun the politics is over here. I had to come back and stir away.

I listened to his whole speech. I get where he is coming from. Can be hard to judge being white and not having these issues.

That said I'm not sure he needed to comment.

Perhaps he should comment on/give a shit about the 93% of blacks that are killed by OTHER BLACKS.

He did bring it up in his speech. He said that can't be dismissed.

I was judged by others when I had a mohwak for a week in college. I heard kids tell there moms I looked scary or others treat me different. I was the same old perosn that had a clean haircut. Yet I was judge for how I looked.

Yet he, Al, Jesse and all the other race-baiters have done EXACTLY that for years.

No political gain in THAT issue.

Nope. Can't just brush it aside. Focus on the issue as a whole.

add to that:
a) High School graduation rates
b) Cultural de-evolution or the downward spiral of black cultural stability
c) Government dollars spent per black american has actually gone up / not down
d) Prideful exclusion from functional society

Blah Blah Blah... on and on
Nobody has let down "Black America" more than it has itself

I like it.

That's why you Ivy League guys are useful. You come up with succinct bullet points like "prideful exclusion from functional society", and "soft bigotry of lowered expectations".

No mention of how irresponsible the media are in cases like this by jumping to conclusions before the facts come out.

Think Tawana Brawley, Edmund Perry, and Crystal Mangum and the Duke lacrosse fiasco in addition to the blatant ways the media tried to make it look like Trayvon was a cherubic teen who was killed by a lawless and mean privileged white guy. The media want us to be aware of how it can be dangerous to be black, yet it seems like pretty much every high profile case the media latched on to turns out to be bunk? How does that help?

I think he had to address it and I think what he said was thoughtful. I think he left some stuff out though. I think he should have said that as a lawyer he agrees that the Zimmerman verdict was correct. The prosecution did not prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Also I think he missed an opportunity to address the basis for certain perceptions. He talked about how Black guys hear car doors lock, see women clutching their purses, etc. And he talked about Black men being more likely to be involved in violence.

But where I think he missed the boat is when he said people use the statistics on Black male crime as an "excuse" to act in a certain way. It's not an "excuse." It's a reason. Somebody has to have the guts to say that the first step towards eliminating having Black guys perceived in a certain way is to reduce the prevalence of Black guys who ACT in certain ways. It's not every Black guy or even a majority of Black guys. But there's no doubt that there is a real basis for being concerned when an unknown Black male is around. It's not irrational.

And that's not going to change until the proportion of Black males acting in certain ways is decreased.

You know I thought about this some more after watching a guy on the MSNBC show I watched some of this morning say he thought what Obama said brought the country more together. I don't think so.

What Obama did was take one side. He referred, for instance, to being a Black guy and seeing women in an elevator clutch their purses tighter as well as look nervous. And it's fair to say we should understand how that is going to bug somebody who has no intent to take anybody's purse or otherwise harm anybody.

But what he did not do is talk about how there should be some understanding for the reaction of the person on the other side of that interaction. As noted in my earlier post, he put that response in the category of using statistics showing that Black males are more likely to be involved in violence as an "excuse." He threw a negative light on what is really a completely reasonable and rational response on the part of one person in the interaction (woman clutching purse) after having thrown a positive "it's understandable" light on a completely reasonable and rational response (Black male hurt and/or offended by noticing that someone is concerned by his presence) on the part of the other person.

He did not engage in an effort to engender understanding of reasonable perceptions and feelings on both sides.
