Dude was a damn fine journalist who broke some big stories including the Stanley McChrystal controversy. Also seriously ruffled Rahm Emmanuel's feathers which is hard to do and always a good thing.

Michael Hastings, the fearless journalist whose reporting brought down the career of General Stanley McChrystal, has died in a car accident in Los Angeles, Rolling Stone has learned. He was 33.

Hastings' unvarnished 2010 profile of McChrystal in the pages of Rolling Stone, "The Runaway General," captured the then-supreme commander of the U.S.-led war effort in Afghanistan openly mocking his civilian commanders in the White House. The maelstrom sparked by its publication concluded with President Obama recalling McChrystal to Washington and the general resigning his post. "The conduct represented in the recently published article does not meet the standard that should be met by – set by a commanding general," Obama said, announcing McChrystal's departure. "It undermines the civilian control of the military that is at the core of our democratic system."

Hastings' hallmark as reporter was his refusal to cozy up to power. While other embedded reporters were charmed by McChrystal's bad-boy bravado and might have excused his insubordination as a joke, Hastings was determined to expose the recklessness of a man leading what Hastings believed to be a reckless war. "Runaway General" was a finalist for a National Magazine Award, won the 2010 Polk award for magazine reporting, and was the basis for Hastings' book, The Operators: The Wild and Terrifying Inside Story of America's War in Afghanistan.

For Hastings, there was no romance to America's misbegotten wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. He had felt the horror of war first-hand: While covering the Iraq war for Newsweek in early 2007, his then-fianceé, an aide worker, was killed in a Baghdad car bombing. Hastings memorialized that relationship in his first book, I Lost My Love in Baghdad: A Modern War Story.

A contributing editor to Rolling Stone, Hastings leaves behind a remarkable legacy of reporting, including an exposé of America's drone war, an exclusive interview with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange at his hideout in the English countryside, an investigation into the Army's illicit use of "psychological operations" to influence sitting Senators and a profile of Taliban captive Bowe Bergdahl, "America's Last Prisoner of War."

Seriously, though, someone (not necessarily the government) did this guy in.

I didn't recognize the name but looking at the stories involved didn't that guy, like, lie to people in order to get stories? Wasn't he sort of dishonest and ruthless?

It seems his capital achievement was getting Stanley McChrystal fired. Am I supposed to be grateful for that? Am I supposed to think McChrystal is some kind of bad guy for talking bad about his boss in private (seriously, who on Earth does THAT?)

I don't know a lot about his activities, but he seems like he's just another Assange-type dip**** that is more about embarrassing people than trying to uncovering any real wrongdoing. :coffee:

The McChrystal piece was his big scoop but he was a war correspondent on the ground for Newsweek for 6 years (among many other gigs since) and wrote a book about his experience after his fiancee was killed by a car bomb in Iraq. And yes, you should be grateful for any real journalism that is taking place whether you agree with it or not. It's in short supply these days. You might appear a little better informed on these things including Assange if you supplemented your establishment media consumption. :thumb:

It's funny.. the people who are there, first on the scene- Hollywood producer Gary Grossman.. His neighbor (wearing a yamaka) and a the Jewish group Hatzalah- Seems like a lot of Jewish people there, just saying.

People first on the scene:

Jewish producer Gary Grossman, his Jewish neighbor spraying water from a hose, and Hatzalah-

What is Hatzalah you ask? good question- Hatzalah is a "special volunteer Emergency Medical Service (EMS) organization serving Jewish communities around the world.

Nothing to see here folks.

This interview is great: The Lady says: "The explosion shook my whole house:"

In this video, we see the special Jewish Hatzala "first responders" there on the scene, long before regular fire and police show up- with their own special vehicle (near the end): There within 3 minutes, excellent response time!

Here, neighbors say it "sounded like a bomb went off" Also mentions Hatzala being there:

The car had no skid-marks on the scene: Therefore no attempt at slowing down:

Imagine a new “E Class” Mercedes exploding in flames, burning to a cinder. 220 km/hr crashes on the Autobahn are often survived, certainly without a fire.

There is a reason to own a Mercedes, in normal circumstances the chances of dying in one are quite remote unless you are Lady Di or heir to the presidency of Syria or, just perhaps, wrote a scathing expose that dismembered part of one of the greatest drug empires of all time.

"Volunteer Jewish E.M.S. Team" on scene of crime long before LAPD!

If we just replace our full-time police departments and EMS professionals on with Jewish volunteer squads and pizza men- who somehow show up at the scene of the crime within 3 minutes of it happening fully clothed and in uniforms- America would be a lot better off ;)
