This is why you give money to homeless services, instead of people holding signs next to the highway or on the street:

This is one I don't think anybody's going to disagree with you about.

Yeah. It's bad everywhere. I saw all these beggars in Paris and found out that not only do they live off the government, but a few of them will go home, "clean up" and can be seen in bars, salons, restaurants, etc..

When I worked at Baja Beach Club in Baltimore in the early 90's, there was a "homeless" guy asking for money outside. At closing time he'd straighten himself up and drive away in a Caddilac. Nothing to see here.

i used to give money to people standing at traffic intersections with signs. I figured if they're scamming it's just a dollar or so. But I saw a documentary about how bad it is. So I stopped.
Another thing that REALLY aggravates me is the gas station thing. You know, you're on a long trip and you stop to get gas and somebody comes up with the "I'm going to my mother's funeral (or other story) and I ran out of gas. Can you give me money for gas?"
I absolutely hate that one.
Anyway in Baton Rouge where I work there's supposed to be a law against panhandling at intersections. But I still see it all the time.

There was a guy who frequented the bars along the beach in San Diego and we got to talking with him one night when he came up to the railing asking for money. Turns out he made about $45000 per year (this was in 1989) TAX FREE by panhandling and picking aluminum cans out of the garbage cans along the boardwalk. I was an Ensign in the Navy at the time making $35000.

This is interesting
‘I need money for weed guy,... has stabbed another panhandler, I need money for ‘Beer Guy’
Via Daily Mail:
Justin Long, a panhandler also known as ‘Weed Guy’ who carries a sign around Times Square that states ‘I need money for weed’, has stabbed another panhandler, ‘Beer Guy’ in the head with a pen on Friday night.
The whole sorry incident was witnessed by two men, who despite being dressed as Alien and Predator, respectively, turned out to be credible witnesses.
Times Square is always a little weird, with its flashing billboards blinding you, throngs of tourists, and fortunately for Beer Guy, lots of police officers.
In what some are calling an outbreak of reefer madness, Weed Guy spat at his beer-loving nemesis.
Beer Guy became enraged. ‘When you spit in my face, darling, I’m going to hit you,’ Beer Guy told NY1.
‘I don’t care who you are, how big you are, I’m going to hit you,’ he said.
‘So the man, he pulled out a pen because I was hitting him, and he started stabbing me in the face, and I have five stab wounds in my face right now.’
Weed Guy’s actions stand in stark contrast to his fellow mellow stoners, indicating he was perhaps not having a successful evening.
Police arrested Justin Long, aka Weed Guy, and Semancik was treated for lacerations to his face at the scene.
It isn’t known what Long will be charged with yet, but according to Alien and Predator, the dispute was some kind of turf war.
If Weed and Beer can’t get along, at least there’s some kind of truce between Alien and Predator.
