The National Security Agency is currently collecting the telephone records of millions of US customers of Verizon, one of America's largest telecoms providers, under a top secret court order issued in April.

The order, a copy of which has been obtained by the Guardian, requires Verizon on an "ongoing, daily basis" to give the NSA information on all telephone calls in its systems, both within the US and between the US and other countries.
Under the Bush administration, officials in security agencies had disclosed to reporters the large-scale collection of call records data by the NSA, but this is the first time significant and top-secret documents have revealed the continuation of the practice on a massive scale under President Obama.

The unlimited nature of the records being handed over to the NSA is extremely unusual. Fisa court orders typically direct the production of records pertaining to a specific named target who is suspected of being an agent of a terrorist group or foreign state, or a finite set of individually named targets.

I get what you're saying but that isn't the point. I hate that I will say this but: If you give a mouse a cookie, he's going to ask for a glass of milk. When you give him the milk, he'll probably ask you for a straw. When he's finished, he'll ask you for a napkin. Then he'll want to look in a mirror to make sure he doesn't have a milk mustache. When he looks in the mirror, he might notice his hair needs a trim. So he'll probably ask for a pair of nail scissors. When he's finished giving himself a trim, he'll want a broom to sweep it up. He'll start sweeping. He might get carried away and sweep every room in the house. He may even end up washing the floors as well! When he's done, he'll probably want to take a nap. You'll have to fix up a little box for him with a blanket and a pillow. He'll crawl in, make himself comfortable and fluff the pillow a few times. He'll probably ask you to read him a story. So you'll read to him from one of your books, and he'll ask to see the pictures. When he looks at the pictures, he'll get so excited he'll want to draw one of his own. He'll ask for paper and crayons. He'll draw a picture. When the picture is finished, he'll want to sign his name with a pen. Then he'll want to hang his picture on your refrigerator. Which means he'll need Scotch tape. He'll hang up his drawing and stand back to look at it. Looking at the refrigerator will remind him that he's thirsty. So... he'll ask for a glass of milk. And chances are if he asks you for a glass of milk, he's going to want a cookie to go with it."

You know...because it's technically "government information". I wonder if it would be considered applicable for a FOIA request. Slippery slope...all in the name of "safety".

Nothing suprises me. I wouldn't be surprised if they have every phone conversation and text that anyone has ever made on file.

I would say that the difficulty, assuming that is true, is employing enough humans to analyze all that data, no?

Therein lies the challenge that faces the intel profession.

Suffice to say, the US and allies collect more data than they can analyze. Certain agencies have incredible capability to filter this data by keyword, but getting it in front of a human who can act on it is the goal.

Future software may be available to analyze the data, aka the Minority Report. Or many I should say over-analyze the data.

I get it now...this is Obama's plan to increase gubmint jobs and stir the economy.

The best part is that you will have people sitting next to each other at desks...and they'll be monitoring each other's monitoring. Call it a white collar version of a road construction crew.

Heck, we'll all get paid for spying on each other. Hitler and Stalin would be proud of Obama!
