"From the state that brought you the nation’s first ban on climate science comes another legislative gem: a bill that would prohibit automakers from selling their cars in the state.

The proposal, which the Raleigh News & Observer reports was unanimously approved by the state’s Senate Commerce Committee on Thursday, would apply to all car manufacturers, but the intended target is clear. It’s aimed at Tesla, the only U.S. automaker whose business model relies on selling cars directly to consumers, rather than through a network of third-party dealerships.

The bill is being pushed by the North Carolina Automobile Dealers Association, a trade group representing the state’s franchised dealerships. Its sponsor is state Sen. Tom Apodaca, a Republican from Henderson, who has said the goal is to prevent unfair competition between manufacturers and dealers. What makes it “unfair competition” as opposed to plain-old “competition”—something Republicans are typically inclined to favor—is not entirely clear. After all, North Carolina doesn’t seem to have a problem with Apple selling its computers online or via its own Apple Stores."

"In its current form, North Carolina’s bill would be the harshest of a handful of anti-Tesla regulations around the country. In Texas, the company is fighting a law under which the employees of its “showroom” in Austin are not allowed to sell any vehicles, offer test drives, or even tell customers how much the car costs. But at least Texas still lets people buy the car online, which North Carolina’s law would prohibit."

Unbelievable. :ohno:

Agreed. Our state is a wonderful place, but the collection of individuals in Raleigh has been a black eye for generations.

The car has an $87K base price. I'm not sure it's really going to have that much of an impact, but I agree that it's tough to follow the logic of the representative from Henneson (that's how they pronounce it). :ohno:

Daewoo tried to sell cars in the US without dealers in the 1990s. Unfortunately, they ran into financial troubles in other ventures and eventually sold their automobile division to GM.

Car dealers have always had a bad reputation...now they are trying to stop (or get a piece of) Tasla's success. :ohno:

Agreed. This is downright ridiculous. It's painfully obvious that they elected officials don't care about a manufacturer-dealership relationship. The lobby group got their way.

So let's recap.

Republicans don't want to be told they have to buy health insurance but they'll tell you how you can and can't buy a car. :ohno:

As jon would say, and I have no doubt he would agree with me, this is nothing but faux outrage.

This situation is no different than a "closed shop" requirement that some states require. :coffee:

Not exactly. One deals with producers who add value to a product and one deals with a parasitic middleman. :coffee:

As is typical of conks they support the parasitic middlemen who are the backbone of their party. Auto dealers, insurance salesmen, bankers.....those who take their cut off the top and add nothing of value. :ohno: Fvcking parasite conk motherfvckers. :ohno:

Parasites...good description of unions. Get paid for 8 hours while only doing 4 hours of half ass work that could easily get done in 2 hours. And people wonder why Detroit is such a shit hole. :coffee:

I hate when people call it Chucktown. You can't go wrong with Charleston, Savannah and Asheville. In fact, many Charlestonians still have summer homes in Asheville. :thumb: :thumb:
