Obama’s 2006 speech on the debt limit
“Mr. President, I rise today to talk about America’s debt problem. The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. government can’t pay its own bills.”
Here, Obama is sounding a bit Tea Partyish.
“It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our government’s reckless fiscal policies. Over the past five years, our federal debt has increased by $3.5 trillion to $8.6 trillion. That is ‘‘trillion’’ with a ‘‘T.’’ That is money that we have borrowed from the Social Security trust fund, borrowed from China and Japan, borrowed from American taxpayers.”

But of course, both sides are gigantic hypocrites on this...

And here I thought YOU were the fisherman.
No question both sides do it, just interesting to see how passionate Obama and Reid were in '06 as debt ceiling increases being such a "failure of leadership" and now are so fervently passionate that an increase isn't up for debate. No to go all KYJelly on you, but it's a pretty disturbing trend with the Dems in control of late. Per Wiki:
Also note from the '06 Reid speech he references how we didn't need to go to $9T - we're over $16T now, an increase of 77%+ in 6 years.

Agreed on the hypocrisy, but something DID happen between 2006 and today.
According to that graph, a Democratic President and Republican controlled congress is ideal, but steer clear of a Democratic congress in all circumstances.

I'm not so sure a Democratic congress is a bad thing, but I think we can all agree that a supermajority congress with the same party controlling the White House is a bad thing. Very bad thing.

Except this one is real. Unlike the climate change one that cherry picked the data.

Increase the ceiling by $1.00, declare a great victory, and go home.

What a crock. Your chart only shows the Obama increase through Aug 2011, Obama's 1st 19 months in Aug, the last time the debt ceiling was raised, yet shows 3 other presidents through 8 years.

Obama is on pace to exceed both Bush's and Clinton.
Plus its under Obama's watch that our national debt exceeded 100% of GDP for the 1st time since 1947.

Obama is well on his way to exceeding Bush and Clinton.
So how many times has it been raised in his first 4 years?

250% of $1 trillion, versus 44.8% of 11.315 trillion.
Debt ceiling was $11.315 trillion when Obama was sworn in. It's $16.39 trillion today and they're asking for more. The debt has increased under Obama more than every previous president combined up to Bill Clinton.
