So in the grander scheme of things, is this a positive?
Wal-Mart plans to hire 100,000 veterans over five years
REUTERS/Eric Thayer
(Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc , the world's largest retailer, said it plans to hire more than 100,000 veterans in the United States over the next five years, a move supported by First Lady Michelle Obama.
Most of the veterans will be placed in the company's stores and clubs, and some will be employed in distribution centers, Walmart U.S. Chief Executive Bill Simon said in a speech to be to delivered on Tuesday at the National Retail Federation conference.
The retailer will start issuing job offers to veterans from Memorial Day in May. The offers will be given to any honorably discharged veteran within his or her first twelve months off active duty.
"Hiring a veteran can be one of the best business decisions you make ... veterans have a record of performance under pressure," Simon said in the speech, a copy of which was provided to Reuters.
Wal-Mart said in a statement that it had spoken with the White House about the hiring commitment and First Lady Michelle Obama's team had expressed an interest in working with the retailer.
"As our wars come to an end and our troops continue to come home, it's more important than ever that all of us - not just government, but our businesses and non-profits as well - do our part to serve those who have served us so bravely," Michelle Obama said in the Wal-Mart statement.

Taking jobs away from others in need of work.

That a successful company like Walmart is saddling itself with 100,000 even worse, poorly trained, illiterate, mentally retarded, drug addled employees.
The upside is 100,000 less bums joining the homeless ranks. Should help keep our taxes low.
The U.S. Military = our largest and most expensive social welfare program.

Won't tell a company how to do it's business, but I don't see how this is a good decision. What if there are more qualified workers? Seems like an affirmative action-esque type of thing, just towards veterans.

Fair enough.
You get where I'm leaning at though.

They do have corporate offices with various professional job positions including information technology. Not sure how many jobs will be for vets, but they do have them.

You're right, their time would really be better spent at Delaware career fairs.

Agreed. They could take all the kids from Jersey and Long Island.

I guess since they would be on government health care regardless (since Walmart doesn;'t really offer health care to employees, and they are paid so shittly, most Walmart employees end up on Medicaid or Medicaire) this is a pr stunt.

That is what I mean - they are already on VA benefits, so Walmart can work them full time and not worry about it.

Ah, gotcha. Seems like a pretty good plan for Walmart. But is it a positive sign for America?

Well, unless something drastic has changed since I got off active service, unless they do 20 years they're not PERMENENTLY on VA benefits.

This could mean several dozen high traffic corner locations in Billings will be looking for new panhandlers. I would hope prospective applicants are already putting together snot infused woolen gloves, head and facial garments, mickey mouse boots and here to fore never laundered trench coats so they can easily qualify when in fact these locations become available.
"Trickle down" might have finally reached the bottom rungs, thirty some odd years after it's inception.

Yes, if the choice is between a Walmart job or no job.

Why should that be the only choice for them?
