Citadel graduate from the class of 2007 has been killed in combat in Afghanistan, the school is reporting.

Army Sgt. Aaron X. Wittman, was killed Jan. 10 in Khogyani District, Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan.

He might not have been contract or scholarship when he graduated. It doesn't happen often, but sometimes grads will decided to enlist some time after they've graduated. Most will be sent to OCS after basic training. When I was a 2LT, I ran into an E-4 at Ft. Carson who graduated two years before I did. He had orders in hand for OCS at the time I met him.

I know of an Air Force Academy grad who did his five years then left the service. He had been out for probably 10-12 years when 9/11 happened. He enlisted in the Army National Guard right after and was sent to Iraq in 2004. He was a National Guard E-5 when he was there.

A lot of guys enlist in the reserves while they are at the school and then just stay on after graduation without taking a commission. I have a classmate who wanted to get into the SEALS quickly without having to do all the commissioning stuff, and he just wanted to be a grunt, so he enlisted. Once he was done having his fun as an operator he took a commission like 7-8 years later.
