The Roman Catholic ministry Courage, which perpetuates the "ex-gay" myth and demands a life of celibacy from gay people, has released a terrifying video featuring a priest rapping about how sexual orientation and identity are a choice.

In eerie rhymes through spoken-word verses, Father Claude "Dusty" Burns, a.k.a. "Father Pontifex," splits hairs over the Catholic Church's reading of same-sex attraction.

Recycling the tired, damaging "hate the sin, but love the sinner" theme, Father Pontifex says, "And how do we identify and not accept a lie / Because sexual desire is just one piece of the pie / Identity is a choice, a lifestyle is something you embrace / Same-sex attraction doesn't define you and can be set in place."

The preacher concludes his rap with the ever-comforting line "Although the church says no to gay marriage, it still says yes to you." Typical catholic doublespeak.

The video is produced by Spirit Juice Studios, which bills itself as a Catholic new media production company and includes a link to Courage in its YouTube description of the video. On its website, Courage promises that "you will learn about samesex attractions and chastity. By developing an interior life of chastity, which is the universal call to all Christians, one can move beyond the confines of the homosexual identity to a more complete one in Christ."

Despite what the Catholic Church says on the matter, every major mainstream medical and psychiatric association in the U.S. has concluded that "ex-gay therapy," "reparative therapy," and attempts to "pray away the gay" are not only unsuccessful but dangerous and damaging to the people subjected to the fear-mongering, shame-based practices.

In my opinion what you're talking about in the reference to what "major mainstream medical and psychiatric" associations say refers to philosophy rather than science. There was a movement that started off wanting to promote the idea that homosexuality is not a disorder and set about doing what it needed to do to have that established as the conventional wisdom.

In any case, I really doubt that there is any controlled experimental evidence supporting the conclusion that "reparative therapy" is unsuccessful and/or dangerous and damaging. Feel free to provide examples of controlled experiments supporting that contention but I think you'll be on a futile search if you look for it. We'll see. What you've got here is one of the most glaring examples of an area in which egalitarian philosophy has corrupted science.

Having said that I expect that there are no controlled experiments demonstrating "reparative therapy" as effective either. What you're going to get are anecdotal examples.

Doesn't matter. Sick is sick whether the illness can be cured or not.

Yes him being deaf is a disorder. Caused by an infectious disease. Fortunately he's not afflicted by the other disorder you mentioned. And, as a father, I'm glad of that. If you asked me if I had to pick between the two disorders under circumstances where I was told by some magical power that he HAD to suffer one of them I would definitely choose deafness. Of course if I could really choose it'd be neither. But if it had to be one it'd be deafness.
