I'm guessing there are folks who would say keeping a bad guy from getting a gun would be a better answer, but there are TONS of things that are illegal in the country, yet people still find a way to get them.

The Dunblane school massacre occurred at Dunblane Primary School in the Scottish town of Dunblane on 13 March 1996. The gunman, 43-year-old Thomas Hamilton (b. 10 May 1952), entered the school armed with four handguns, shooting and killing sixteen children and one adult before committing suicide.

So they banned private ownership of guns.

The Cumbria shootings was a killing spree that occurred on 2 June 2010 when a lone gunman, Derrick Bird, killed 12 people and injured 11 others before killing himself in Cumbria, England.

That's one view, another view is it would get more kids killed every year.

There were over half a million episodes of reported teacher-student incidents in America just in 2011!!

So the NRA and gun supporters say we just give teachers or the principal guns and then...

-Teacher claims self-defense during conflict with an unarmed student and shoots them
-Another teacher/principal steps into incident and shoots kid
-Teacher/principal takes out gun during an incident and is overpowered by another student & people get shot
-Kids who were not the intended target in any of these incidents get shot

You think in over 500K documented cases per year, not counting who knows how many "undocumented cases" that these outcomes and many other tragic ones aren't going to occur? Not a chance.

By the way, as people like to conveniently forget: Columbine H.S. had an armed guard on duty that day.....

Done correctly, this would not be so. You have such a hard onto "save the children". Well, lets do it. Lets make schools truly secure. But this is going to cost money. I'm ok with that, are you? It's worth it if it makes kids safer.

Will it make it 100% safe? Well now, that's impossible. But it will work better than banning a type of gun.

I don't own an AR, have no desire or need for one. But, vie seriously considered dropping 30 grand or so to buy some and hold onto them. Anyone that does will make a fortune if the ban goes through.

I lost a child and understand the pain...and have grand kids that I want to have so much more than I did...yea, I care...

It doesn't matter if you ban "assault weapons". How many handguns did this guy have with him? The Colorado theater shooter had a handgun and a shotgun with him in addition to the AR15. Columbine shooters had handguns, shotguns, rifles, knives, and pipe bombs.

Seems like a lot of carnage can happen without an "assault weapon".

Would an armed guard in schools help? It couldn't hurt. Will an armed guard stop this every time? Nope (see Columbine).

I have kids in elementary school too. I also serve as president of our local school board and commit a lot of hours every month to those duties. Don't tell me I don't give a shit about kids.

And I don't even own a gun other than a pellet gun. But I sure as hell don't want to see the govt start taking our rights away. What's next after guns, freedom of the press? Freedom of speech?

People that are going to perform mass murder, plan this stuff. If the Assault rifles are not available legally, they will hit the black market. They will keep finding what they need somewhere. Guns, bombs, chemicals, knives etc are the symptom of a sick person. Trying to let a sick person mingle with society because the family feels guilty for locking them up and treating them different. The fact is, they are different and need to be treated that way. If this guy would have been in a place for sick people, this would not have happened. If guns were banned, would it have happend?
