Why can't we talk about psychiatric medications?

Post by Pwns »

Simple question: Could the reason that we see these types of shootings more in the US than in other types of the world have anything to do with our (i.e. US medicine's) tendency to overmedicate anyone with mental problems?

It has been known for a while that many anti-depressants and anti-psychotics can lead to unintended behavioral changes which include violent outbursts. The long-term effects of these drugs are not well-studied and there has been no testing on how they interact while more and more mental patients are taking cocktails of these drugs.

There is a complete lack of scientific rigor in psychiatric medicine that has been ignored for far too long that needs to be scrutinized. But by all means keep on trying to find ways to keep crazy folks from getting guns when the things are everywhere. :dunce: :ohno:

Cuts in funding for mental illness through Medicaid and Medicare has forced thousands of people who should be institutionalized onto the streets, leaving the problems to local governments.

It's not a lack of medications, its the substituting drugs and relying on them actually taking them over secure supervision.

No bucks, no Buck Rodgers.

Exactly my point Wedgie...we medicate every type of anti-social behavior and use more drugs for more things even if they aren't neccesarily approved for those types of conditions...never mind the unscientific way in which many mental disorders are classified and diagnosed. Psychiatry has turned into a bunch of quacks experimenting on the clinically insane if you ask me.

:coffee:

People use drugs every day to get through life. Alcohol use is rampant, smoking tabacco is still popular (though dipping), and watching TV might as well be a drug because it is an escape from reality and has a somewhat similar effect as going to sleep. So it is all just a matter of how you define anti-social behavior and use of drugs to pacify folks...or make them more aggressive.

And heaven forbid if you want to separate challenged people from normal (now there is a concept  ) folks...lawsuits from the all inclusive Libs force schools to accomodate people they really are not capable of handling.

Can't really blame the drugs...and it is hard to identify, and them legally isolate, those who might be a danger to society.

Uhhh, as long as there are people like you around there will be a need to protect menatally ill and handicapped students and citizens. Keeping them engaged in the general population is the only way right now.
