At my school, the janitor was a "free thinker" who was valedictorian at UNI.

The question I have is, did the Catholic church allow openly gay men to be priests because they were all inclusive, or was it due to pressure from gay community to allow them to be priests?

Maybe I am mixing organizations and stories, but I see how the Boy Scouts are vilified as being homophobic because they won't allow gay men to lead, but then they are assholes for allowing pedophilia to happen.

Of all the institutions caught up in child sexual abuse allegations -- public and private schools, the Boy Scouts, the disaster that is Penn State University -- wouldn't you think the Catholic Church by now would know how to deal with it?

Not the Diocese of San Jose. Its handling of an incident with a registered sex offender on an elementary school campus last month is a worst-case example of institutional culture making it all but impossible to restore public trust. Registered pedophile Mark Gurries' volunteer work at the St. Frances Cabrini Parish fiesta and its ugly aftermath is a textbook example of what not to do.

Registered sex offenders are barred from schools, with good reason. But soon after Gurries' release from jail, someone at the diocese gave him a letter of permission to be there. A young woman who knew Gurries' victim recognized him at the Oct. 6 festival and mobilized parents to protest his presence, but the parish priest resisted asking him to leave for hours.

That alone was appalling. Compassion for Gurries should never have trumped the risk to children or the discomfort of members of the school community at the pedophile's presence. But Bishop Patrick J. McGrath quickly could have calmed the waters if he'd spoken openly about the incident from the start. Instead, he issued a brief statement that Gurries' permission was not consistent with diocese policy and would be investigated.

It took six weeks for him to write a full apology -- and even then, he left the origin of the permission letter unclear. A former personnel department employee has taken the fall, but many parents believe there had to be higher authorization and wonder if the problem really is resolved. Some think the parish priest, who has resigned, is another scapegoat. At a community meeting Wednesday night, emotions were as raw as they were at the festival.

Complicating all this are recent lawsuits from former children in the diocese...

Neither. Perveted, sick men, gay or not, flocked to the catholic church to gain unfettered access to children, nuns, each other, young seminarians, timid employees, catholic students...you name it.

For centuries, if you wanted rape or torture children for fun, you became a catholic priest.

I am not Catholic, so I really didn't know. Thanks for the explanation.

Timothy Dolan has been curiously silent since the highly damning news that he may have paid pedophile priests in his (former) Milwaukee Archdiocese as much as $20,000 to go away broke on May 31. It's likely that Dolan, his advisors and his apologists are waiting for the reports to die down -- to go away, perhaps in the manner of those Milwaukee priests who abused children.

When the Cardinal finishes being silent, he'll have some explaining to do.

He spoke to the New York Post on June 4 but didn't say much. He didn't deny making the payments, but he described the Times' claim that he had as "groundless", and took a shot at New York City's paper of record. Isn't his admission grounds enough for a reporter to go with the story?

The newly revealed document is the minutes of a meeting of the finance council of the Milwaukee archdiocese from March 7, 2003, which Cardinal Dolan attended. The archdiocese was facing a flood of potential lawsuits by people claiming abuse, and the church’s insurance company was refusing to cover the costs because it said the church had been negligent. The minutes noted that “unassignable priests” — those suspected of abuse — were still receiving full salaries.

The minutes say that those at the meeting discussed a proposal to “offer $20,000 for laicization ($10,000 at the start and $10,000 at the completion the process).” Instead of salary, they would receive a $1,250 monthly pension benefit, and, until they found another job, health insurance.

The first known payment in Milwaukee was to Franklyn Becker, a former priest with many victims. Cardinal Dolan said in response to a reporter’s question at the time that the payment was “an act of charity,” so that Mr. Becker could pay for health insurance.

According to church documents, Mr. Becker was accused of abusing at least 10 minors, and given a diagnosis of pedophilia in 1983. The church paid more than $16 million to settle lawsuits involving him and one other priest.
