What are the new marijuana tax laws....

Here's what just passed: Initiative 502
First:
Seattle City Attorney Pete Holmes said today that "Drug policy scholars have already noted that the Constitution does not allow the federal government either to order state governments to create any particular criminal law or to require state and local police to enforce federal criminal laws and we plan on moving forward under than premise" Balsy - I like it
The state Run Stores:
***Registered growers will be state licensed and regulated to meet a growers standard
Just like if you wanted to process and sell food products in stores
***Each small container of retail product will be packed to a standard (as yet not determined) and serial numbered and inventoried as though it were a prescription drug
***The State of Washington will be imposing a 25% tax rate on the product three times
***when the grower sells it to the processor 25% transaction fee
***when the processor sells it to the retailer 25% transaction fee
***when the retailer sells it to the customer 25% transaction fee
"Washington's local government and it's citizens have a great relationship with our police officers and the city voted ten years ago for Initiative 75, making marijuana the lowest enforcement priority for the Seattle Police Department and they have honored that agreement. Today it just got lower."

And it'll still cost less than when a drug dealer sells and ounce....imagine that

I commend Washington for this.
Don't forget the state revenue will not only benefit from the increased tax revenue but will likely also see a decrease in law enforcement costs. That may be offset by the cost to enforce the tax, but only time will tell.

I am one that thinks this should be the norm in the whole country. But, if the last few years are any clue then it will take Obama to stop the Feds from fucking people over in these states. Because up to this point nothing has stopped them from arresting and confiscating from people who were in full compliance with their states laws.

Actually referendum 75 (about 10 years ago) in Washington state
Made marijuana the lowest priority for Police officers in the state
So Washington hasn't been arresting marijuana use for a long time

Ft. Collins Colo passed a misdemeanor law for pot possession on the streets years back, get caught smoking in public, $20.00 spot fine.
Looks like no more fines.

My only issue with legalizing MJ is I don't want it smoked around me.
In your home/car - go for it.
In public, just like cigarettes - hell no.

That's been the biggest sticking point actually
I don't necessarily want the sh!t being smoked all over the streets either
We'll see - Bars and restaurants have been preparing for this all year - knowing full well it would pass easily
"Thank you for not smoking Marijuana on or around our premises" signs went up about a month ago at a few of the big night clubs

Don't get too excited Cleets....I think you have to actually be "sick" to use medical pot.

Don't think that'll happen. They're planning to treat driving high the same as driving drunk, and that's enforced pretty strictly here, at least compared to MT.
Also:
That’s right -- many speculate that the price of marijuana will go down significantly as the industry enters a new legal environment. A report by Dale Gieringer, director of California NORML, a non-profit lobbying group working to legalize marijuana, shows that legal marijuana in an open market could cost as little as $3 an ounce -- 100 times less than its current price of about $300 (H/t: Slate).

This isn't medicinal use only, G8, it's full on legalization.

My bad, I guess I should have read instead of skimming.
This is big, and something I agree with - although I don't partake I've always said that marijuana is a much less dangerous drug than alcohol. Convenience store robberies would drop dramatically with pot vs. alcohol, although I'd be worried if I worked at Taco Bell.

1st:
It's 100% legal in Washington State as of right now
Not medical exemption or decriminalized - IT'S LEGAL - just like Beer
2nd:
I hate the sh!t
It stinks like ass - and makes you dumber than a box of cold blue rocks

That's GREAT news. Can't wait to see how this turns out.

Looks like Washington state tourism will increase at Amsterdam's expense.

I think it's technically Dec 9, but like you've said, it's not like anyone will be thrown in jail for it before then.

Nope...
Not even close - the initial prices will be pretty high
as it's taxed 25% / 25% / 25%
So by the time it hits the consumer an ounce will be around $250
If prices drop too low - as stated already - Local officials have smartly allowed themselves to adjust taxation accordingly (50% tax or more is a real possibility)
Prices will never drop below $200 an ounce - they'll tax the sh!t 350% if they have to

I'm wondering how this will impact pre-employment and random work drug screens. If it's legal to consume is it now something a potential or current employer can contest with a positive result?

Yup employers can test and screen for pot use and opt not to employ as well as fire workers who are high or drunk on the job

I'm not speaking for G8, but I assume he was asking about it even being in your system. Pot is detectible for what, 30 days?

Longer even I think....
Nothing changes - Employers have rights
It's still an impairing drug and can be treated as such
