I lost my job when my company was merged into another, and I've been a geographic bachelor for almost 2 years now, only getting home on weekends. Missed the last two years of my kids high school lives....and only get to see my wife 2 nights a week.
I'm able to pay the bills, but am hardly better off. The only reason I'm a geographic bachelor is because I'd rather do that than sit on my ass and collect unemployment in phoenix.

I have a better job than I did 4 years ago, but that wasn't Obama's doing. I'm slightly better off than I was 4 years ago.

Yes. Because the economy has done so poorly, interest rates have plummeted and my business has never been better. A rather dubious situation.

My wife's situation is kind of the same as '89 Hens. She works in a field that helps people who have left their job (fired, quit, laid off whatever reason), in turn business is booming & her experience has become more valuable, meaning more cash for us.

I have to say that thing are, in fact, better than they were four years ago
Earnings are up
Expenses are down a bit (mostly due to a refinancing of my morgage)
The kids are all in in a good school situation
My health is better
The wife is a little less cranky
(I'm sure a Dan joke is forthcoming)
The fishing has been good
The beaches have been renourished and look great
No red tide
The public golf courses have been in good shape due to adequate rain
Wait, I think I have ventured beyond the scope of the question.

I'm in the same position I was 4 years ago. So technically I'm not better off...but I'm not worse off either.
Which has shown me the true value, or lack there of, of the federal government.

You could go anywhere in the nation and get a great paying job and ultimately be better off.

Not even close. My situation is similar to AZ's, I was laid off almost 2 years ago. While I was laid off I looked for work all over the country because I would rather be employed than sit on my butt. I found a local job making 60% of what I was and am getting by waiting for the opportunity to climb back up the ladder.

BTW, Mrs89 has had to take a pay cut in two of the last three years at her salaried job.

I received no pay raises in the last 3 years of my old job and had to pick up an increasing portion of the cost of my healthcare so I my take-home pay was reduced as well. Things were going downhill during Dubya's administration, I can't blame everything on Obama. That last 10 years have been pretty miserable from a political leadership perspective.
