I was talking to some nutjob last month that was convinced the GOP and the Spanish Government are rigging this years election. He was blabbing about Spanish voting machines, blah blah blah.

the government isn't competent enough to run a real election, moreover fake it with the appearance of normalcy.
My sister works in the voting industry - has worked for several of the big providers over the past decade. The entire thing is so decentralized, so full of people that inherently distrust one another, and so paper based, it makes the post office look like profit machine that would shame Apple or Exxon.

One thing you need to bear in mind, EX, is that the media never get it quite right. At least that's what I believe. I've written this before but I'll repeat it: During my lifetime I've had a number of experiences such that I was involved in something that caught the media's eye. Seafood safety issues. Hurricane Katrina. The BP Oil Spill. Things like that.
And it struck me that the media NEVER created an accurate impression with respect to things I had first hand knowledge about. It's kind of frightening actually because I realize that I, like anybody else, see most of what I see about the world through the media. When I think about things I've been personally involved in and how "off" the media have been about all of them, I have to wonder if anything I think I know about the world out there is correct or even close to it.
I suspect that, as is usually the case, the media reports seen here leave key information points out, lack full perspective, and end up exaggerating the risk.
