No, Germany and France as well as the other founding members of NATO owe us billions if times over. That would be the billions upon billions of dollars that signify our 22% contribution to the overall budget of NATO each year. We contribute 1/4, and the other 27 nations cover the other 3/4.

All the while, Germany and France and Sweden, Norway, Denmark, The Netherlands, Belgium etcetera etcetera etcetera have had all that money freed up to pay for those wonderful social programs they have because Americans have been doing their defense spending for them.

I agree with Klean. As long as we are willing to play World Policeman, Germany, France and Co. are going to be more than willing to sit by while we do so. (And all the while reserving the right to shrug disdainfully at those meddlesome bellicose Americans.)

And Obama wants to decrease it, while expanding the laundry list overseas.

Personally, I think Romney's offer if increasing defense spending is just red meat. Sort of like publicly subsidized Jimmy Hats for Georgetown coeds for the right.

We ought to go ahead and nuke somebody just to show how crazy we are so nobody will mess with us from now on. Iran would be a good candidate. Just try to wait until winds are right and pick a target so we don't drench their neighbors with too much fallout. But, really, one of these days we need to just go ahead and wipe some country completely out to make an example and make people wonder if the same thing's going to happen to them if they piss us off.

Say we just ruthlessly wiped Iran out. No mercy. No concern over civilians. Scorched earth. What do you think would happen? Do you think anybody would attack us or anything? Do you think they'd do anything other than fuss?

Yes. And it worked. A nation of fanatics that made today's Islamists look like a bunch of Winne the Poos and was going to fight to the last human being cried "Uncle." But that was a long time ago and people don't think we'd do it now. Make people think we'd do it and it'd be a different paradigm. I guarantee it.

Let's see...the whole world save Israel would hate us. Sanctions would follow. Our troops all over the world would be under attack. Our embassies would burn. And the American hegemony would officially be over. Need anything else?

I really, really don't think those two things would happen if we'd just shown that we were willing to wipe out about 75 million people because a country pissed us off.

You might have some moral reservations about it. But one thing that would NOT happen is people getting aggressive with us. Not people in what we call the "Muslim World" anyway. We might have trouble with Russia. But we've been through that before. We both know we can wipe each other out along with the rest of the world and that influences our action with respect to each other.

But no other nation is in the position with respect to us as Russia is in those terms. Not even China. At least not yet. Some other nations have a few nukes but they are hopelessly outgunned in those terms.

If we were to show that we are willing to just wipe countries out for messing with us countries would not mess with us because we are indeed capable of just wiping them out.

Oh...I realize that the reality is we won't do it. We are too "moral." But think about how it would be if we weren't. Think about the capability to inflict death and destruction that we have.

Suppose we were totally ruthless. Suppose we'd do things like, say, nuke Mecca if somebody flew into the World Trade Centers. And suppose people knew we'd do that sort of thing. Suppose they thought we might even just wipe out the Islamic world. And we do have the power to do that. I'd say there's a pretty good chance nobody, no matter how fanatic, would fly into the World Trade Centers.

I guarantee you that people would not mess with us like they do know. Right now we are like a gentle giant that will tolerate tiny people pricking our toes without just wiping them out. And everybody knows it.

Yes that's it. We're loaded with nukes plus if we were like that we'd probably also be loaded with biological and chemical weapons because we wouldn't give a crap killing millions of people in a heartbeat and we've got the expertise and logistic capability to do that. So if we acted crazy and ruthless I think people would think way more than twice about doing anything to set us off.
