Oakland police are investigating the shooting death of a 37-year-old transgender woman in downtown Oakland early Sunday morning.

According to press reports, the woman, who has only been identified by friends and family as Brandy, was walking near 13th and Franklin streets at about 6 a.m. when she was shot in front of the Golden Lotus Cafe. Police say she was involved in some type of altercation before the shooting.

Community organizations have said they believe the shooting was motivated by hate (conks). According to Oakland Occupy Patriarchy, a branch of Occupy Oakland, Brandy was shot by a man (SuperHornet, PWNS, BDKM??) who had "become enraged and shot her when he realized she was trans."

We put in a call to the Oakland Police Department to confirm these details. We will tell you more when we know more.
Meanwhile, the community organized an emergency vigil for the victim on Sunday night at the same location where she was shot.

Holly Fogleboch, an Oakland resident, says she came across the vigil last night, and tells SF Weekly that it was a tearful and raw gathering."This morning I can't shake the pain of what I saw, not for me but for that family and for those friends and for the people who make their living on those corners and will be out there again tonight while Brandi's [sic] blood is still drying on the pavement," Fogleboch wrote in an e-mail.

My bs-o-meter just went nuts. Have you ever been to Oakland, I'm not an expert, but did a lot of research when we almost moved to the area and still might some day. We just moved out of our appartment in the Oakland/San Jose burbs, back to Minnesota. We took the Garmin instructions from the airport to the apartment. Ended up going thru Hayward at 1am on a Friday night. A car load of bangs slowed down to let us drive past, and made sure we knew they had guns by flashing them to us as we drove by. Garmin sucks. The closer you get to Oakland, the worse it gets.

Another transgender woman and friend of Martell’s—who wants to keep her identity private—was in the back seat of the car. According to this witness, she, Martell and two other transgender women had been socializing in the parked vehicle for several hours. Around 3 am, two men approached the car and chatted with the women briefly, the witness said. Martell and the other women told the men they were transgendered, and after a seemingly cordial conversation, the men walked off, said the witness.

Two hours later, the men reappeared, and one of them stuck the barrel of an automatic weapon into the crack of Martell’s window, according to the witness. According to her, the man shot Martell in the side, and the other women fled as Martell tried to drive away. Martell made it only as far as the intersection before her wounds stopped her. The gunman fired multiple shots into the car, two of which struck Martell, the witness said. The shooter and the other man got away on foot. The other women in the car had been taken away by the police to give their witness statements by the time the ambulance arrived, the witness said.

The motive for Martell’s murder remains unclear, but a woman who was sitting next to Martell when the shooting started told the Bay Area Reporter this week that she suspects the reasons are hate crime and robbery.

Either way, Felisha Johnson, who had known Martell since 1995, said she wants her friend’s killer brought to justice “immediately.”

“They entered our world, and they took my sister’s life,” said Johnson, 32.

Johnson said that she, Martell, who lived in Hayward, and two others were socializing in Martell’s car when two men approached around 4 a.m. One spoke with Johnson, while the other talked to Martell.

The men told them their names and where they were from. She said the men told them they were Ethiopian, but she couldn’t remember their names.

They also told Martell and Johnson to come home with them, she said.

She said the men “kept trying to touch us” and put their hands down their tops. Johnson said she swatted away the hand of the man at her window.

Johnson said she’d been drinking, and “I was pretty wasted, but it wasn’t like I was so drunk I didn’t know what was going on.” The conversation lasted about 10 minutes.

At one point, she said, she told Martell, “I don’t think they know what’s going on,” referring to their gender identity. She said that Martell said, “Let them know,” and Johnson said she replied, “‘You let them know.’”

“We kind of giggled about it,” she said. “Basically, they figured it out,” and she didn’t directly tell the men they were transgender.

The men’s reaction was “Nah, nah, I’m good,” and they left without any argument or saying anything anti-gay or anti-trans, said Johnson.

About half an hour after the men left, the one who’d been talking to Martell returned.

“I looked over and there was a gun in the car,” said Johnson. The man demanded money, and Johnson tried to hand him her purse, but he rejected it.

“I kept my eyes on the gun,” said Johnson. “I don’t remember Brandy saying anything. He just shot.”

Johnson said she “took off running” down the street, screaming for others to call the police as the shots continued.

Martell drove off and made it about 50 feet to the corner of Franklin and 13th streets, said Johnson, but when she returned to the car, Martell wasn’t moving.

Oakland Police Department spokeswoman Lea Rubio said last week that police responded to the scene at 5:16 a.m. Martell was pronounced dead at the location.

Asked about the possible motive, Johnson said, “I think it was robbery and a hate crime, because all of a sudden, he wanted to come back after everything had been going on all fine and dandy.”

She indicated that she thinks if the motive had just been robbery, he wouldn’t have taken the extreme actions that he did.

“Everything you needed was right there, if you would have just taken that car,” she said.
