Paul Ryan, Deficit Hawk, Anti-Government

Voted for the Bush tax cuts.
Voted for Medicare Part D, forbidding the government to negotiate on drug prices
Voted for the War in Iraq and all emergency funding bills
Voted for Tarp and stimulus

Has never had a career outside of D.C.
Benefited from SS survivor checks when his dad passed away to help pay for school.
Most meaningful legislation he's sponsored and that has passed has something to do with arrows.

And this doesn't even get into his Budget Plan which does very little anytime soon toward balancing things and is basically just a Randian giveaway to the heroic "producers".

I might have to re-think my opinion on Ryan being a good choice. Not so sure his good looks and charisma will be enough to hide the substance of his thoughts.

Here's a good read from the Atlantic. I especially like this quote which pretty much sums everything up about our political discourse both on cs.com and abroad.

"where counter-intuitive bullshitting is valorized, where the pose of argument is more important than the actual pursuit of truth, where clever answers take precedence over profound questions."

Nice to see kalm up early this morning getting his fresh talking points from thinkprogress and the DemocraticUnderground.

Actually it started with Yahoo news and led to the Atlantic but these are everywhere. :kisswink:

But talking points or not, Ryan 1) loves government and 2) tends to vote pro-deficit.

Love that party of small government.

What's the difference? :suspicious:

Yes, Ryan's mom is on Medicare and he got a couple of years of SSI bennies after his dad died.
After all, they did pay for it. :coffee:

Otherwise, if he was such a lover of big government, I believe he would have voted for the feds to have the ability to "negotiate" (set) the prices of prescription drugs, Obamacare, Dodd-Frankenstein, etc.

Lots of people in Congress cast regrettable votes for TARP and the like. They were sold a fake bill of goods, too. It's good to know that many of them learned their lesson. :thumb:

No difference between Yahoo News and TP or DU?

And yes, Medicare is definitely big government. But the ability of the feds to negotiate prices down would be a deficit reducer. :coffee:

Yep, you can hang many congressman from the gallows of hypocrisy based on their voting record. The point being the Ryan is clearly unremarkable in standing up for his, ahem, supposed convictions. Just another Washington pol with pretty face and smooth delivery. :ohno:

Negotiate.

The feds wouldn't negotiate, they would set a price, period. Good for Medicare and Medicaid I guess, but a big fuck you to the rest of us who would then have to pay much higher prices to make up the difference.

Hypocrisy is the status-quo in Washington. Kinda like the Donks complaining about Medicare Part D being a "big government program". They're only complaining because it was a Bush initiative when in fact they wanted something much much larger and much more expensive.

1. Conkjecture

2. Not even close, Dummy. Conk's foundational ideological principle is less government, yet they only push it, in words only, when donks are in charge. :ohno: Donks at least are somewhat consistent.

Baldy, you seriously need to take a break. You're losing it, big time. You used to be a somewhat astute, but brainwashed, political commentator. Get away from the computer and go beat the fuck out of a homeless person or heckle poor people at the welfare office - and get your bearings set.

Why are you Donks running so scared? Why is the Obama team attacking Ryan so much? Sure he's a tougher out than Palin, but if Bush could win reelection surely Obama can as well...

When you have a guy who can reach out in a sensible straightforward manner and make Donks like Bowles see the light, the target will be squarely planted on your back.

It's an election, Baldy. What's the Obama camp supposed to do, laud him as a great choice and say he'd be good for the country? :suspicious:

How about simply ignore him and remind the country how we simply need to stay the course and we'll continue to reap the benefits of the Obama presidency?

So I don't get it - the left rails against hard right politicians that cling completely to a "no tax increase" pledge and show no flexibility to work around that, but then when a right wing politician shows flexibility and can bounce from one side of the political chasm to the other, he's labeled as a hypocrite? Is it no wonder that we don't have a lot of politicians that can work with the other side these days when we ourselves criticize the politicians that do that?

I don't think they're scared at all, especially when they try to find 270 electoral college votes for the republicans.

I think the wack job right isn't liking being on the receiving end of a style of politics that their boys Atwater and Rove, et al, invented. :coffee:

1) What part of a "no tax increase" pledge is flexible?

2) Everybody, wants deficits reduced. Some people recognize that you still have to pay for things like wars, homeland security departments etc.
