Only the New York Times could write such a flowery tribute to the bloviating, self-promoting author of Myra Breckenridge.

RIP to a great American
Some of his political positions were similarly quarrelsome and provocative. Mr. Vidal was an outspoken critic of Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians, and once called Norman Podhoretz, the editor of Commentary, and his wife, the journalist Midge Decter, “Israeli Fifth Columnists.” In the 1990s he wrote sympathetically about Timothy McVeigh, who was executed for the Oklahoma City bombing. And after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, he wrote an essay for Vanity Fair arguing that America had brought the attacks upon itself by maintaining imperialist foreign policies. In another essay, for The Independent, he compared the attacks to the Japanese raid on Pearl Harbor, arguing that both Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and George W. Bush knew of them in advance and exploited them to advance their agendas.

RIP to one of the greatest American historians and novelists.

His intellect runs circles around the likes of the Baldy's of the world, which is why they feared him.

America is a much dumber, sadder place today.

Baldy is a genius when it comes to conservative ideology only. He knows jack shit about anything else in the world.

Gore Vidal would have ripped Baldy to shreds in a bar fight too.

It got that way when you entered it, not when he left.

While in NYC this past week, The Griz Goddess and myself attended a broadway play written by Gore Vidal called "The Best Man"....a play about the runup to a political convention starring James Earl Jones, John Laroquette, John Stamos, Cybil Shepherd, Kristen Davis and some others...very funny stuff and despite being written almost 40 years ago the humor was still relevant today.

It was actually quite good. Plus, I can now go to my grave saying I saw James Earl Jones perform in person.... :thumb:

Well, no...but I never saw anybody say he was somebody to be afraid of. Every time I saw stuff about debates he had he got owned. He was pretty darned ineffective in my opinion. D1B's a lot more effective than he was. So is YT. And YT is only 18 years old.

I know absolutely nothing about Gore Vidal except he didn't go to college and had a particularly long public discussion with William Buckley during the DNC convention in '68.

I just thought it was a good quote. I think Ron Paul has good quotes too, hell even Ronald Reagan has some good quotes when they aren't riddled with inaccuracies. Do I agree with any of these people's politics? Not necessarily, I just thought it was a good quote.

So yeah. Who cares?
