Pennsylvania wastes more tax dollars by being one of the few states to have state-run liquor stores. Vermont has them, too, and there may be one or two others.

Fill me in please. What is bad about state liquor stores? Are they different on the EC(b) than here in God's Country?

bluhenbillk would know more about it than I do, but there are no private liquor stores in PA to compete on price. that's the main rub: a state monopoly. In Vermont, I believe you can get beer and wine at supermarkets, but not the hard stuff.

I think we have different things here. Beer and wine can be bought anywhere one wants, gas stations, clothing stores, fashion places, grocery stores, hell, I saw some wine for sale the other day at place that sells craft stuff. Liquor can be bought at a state store or any bar, casino, or...there is another one and cannot seem to remember.

You can from a bar where they sell liquor by the drink. We only have one casino in Cherokee, and they just started selling alcohol. I'm not sure if liquor by the drink was approved.

You can't buy a bottle of liquor from any store except a state ABC store. Beer and wine you can buy at grocery stores, etc., in areas that aren't dry.

Kind of makes a fella want to go ahead and drink it while he can if in fact, he does have possession of a bottle that is.

In my county:

County store = liquor, warm beer and wine, no mixers, no ice, no cups
Package store = warm or cold beer and wine, no liquor
Some delis = cold 6 packs
Grocery stores and gas stations = no alcohol of any kind

PA Laws are a bit strange, but you can get everything you want at good price and selection.

Beer is only restricted by the amount sold. Bars/Deli's can sell take out beer by the 12 pack or less, and they need a "bar" license. To buy a case or kegs a distributor license is needed. PA Beer distributors have a great selection and usually good prices, because selling beer is their only business. When I buy beer in NY, NJ, MD, etc. I am always disappointed by the selection. The state of PA controls the distribution of wine and liquor through their state run stores. The only thing annoying about the PA system is going to two different places to get beer and wine.

Other states also have some weird rules. In Maine I believe one cannot buy liquor or kegs of beer retail, but cans and bottles of beer are available in super markets

Actually it's close to 90k students when you factor in all the satellite campuses. And while it's probably shocking to people here, there is probably a majority of the population that doesn't even follow college football and you figure that would be the case with Penn St too - I know plenty of people who graduated from there and never saw a game. A shame to some extent for them to have nothing to do with football and the disgraceful coverup of abuses just to protect the football image and have their school now labeled forever like this.

I know it would never be shut down - wouldn't be fair to 99.99%.

But the BOT needs to go. Any reference to Paterno needs to go. Spanier et al need to be in jail.

This is 100% accurate about PA.

The 3 most annoying things-

1- You have to go to 2 different places to buy beer/liquor.

2- There is a place I go regularly where you can only walk out of the store with 12 beers at a time. So if you buy 2 cases worth - you technically have to make 4 trips & they actually enforce this.

3- DE is cheaper across the board than PA. And then MD is across the board cheaper than DE.
