The heads of government in London for the G-20 summit are discussing serious and weighty issues, which in time will be duly reported on, but right now the British press is entranced by the sheer size of President Obama's traveling entourage. And no wonder.

Obama arrived with 500 staff in tow, including 200 Secret Service agents, a team of six doctors, the White House chef and kitchen staff with the president's own food and water.

And, according to the Evening Standard, he also came with "35 vehicles in all, four speech writers and 12 teleprompters." For sure, our president is not going to be at a loss for words.

The press duly reported on Air Force One and all its bells and whistles but also on the presence of the presidential helicopter, Marine One, and a fleet of identical decoys to ferry him from Stansted airport to central London.

Among all those vehicles is the presidential limousine, which one local paper mistakenly called Cadillac One, but is universally referred to as the Beast. The limo, reinforced with ceramic and titanium armor, carries tear gas cannon, night vision devices, its own oxygen and is resistant to chemical and radiation attack. It is, marveled one reporter, a sort of mobile panic room. The Guardian called it "the ultimate in heavily armored transport."

Que in Michelle Bachmann who when asked a question on her favorite recipe for cocco nut balls, responds,

"And just so you all know, President Obama is taking a hideously expensive vacation to London including ships, planes, tanks, helicopters, and ground forces at the expense of American taxpayers of over 200 million dollars a day, yapity, yapity, yapity, yapity, yapity, yapity....

Michelle Bachmann is a whackjob but ASUG8 raises a legitimate concern. This country has serious debt issues and needs to practice fiscal restraint and the POTUS needs to set the tone. 500 People and 35 vehicles would appear to be complete overkill with or without MB's vitriolic hyperbole.

He needs to be protected, but surely you can't justify this.....does giving a kneejerk hypothetical Michelle Bachmann response to this mean that you agree with this level of security? I thought we pretty much established in another thread that Bachmann isn't terribly relevant..... :coffee:

Well let's see here, Dick Cheney came to Billings four years ago to campaign for soon to be ousted Senator Conrad Burns, there was a bevy of aircraft including of course Airforce Two, two giant military cargo planes, dozens of vehicles, helicopter gunships, etc. They shut down traffic so Dick could be escorted down 27th st and then east to the metra via a limousine motorcade with helicopter gunships riding shotgun on either side, again the purpose of the visit was to try and prop up sinking GOP Senator and known asshat, Conrad Burns.

Michelle Bachmann has not spoken on this soon to be feigned outrage that originated right here on the Championships Subdivision Politics board, but I just gave you a peek into her future comments...

Yeah, I am outraged that a second class person (notice I did not use the word "citizen" so as to not outrage our conks here) just flies around the world whenever he wants on our nation's most elaborate and secure aircraft with personal protection whenever he wants to.

Burns lost in 2006. I'm not sure if any of your story is accurate. :kisswink:
