The article is misleading. The Friendly Atheist is a million times more popular than the aforementioned blogger and it's portrayed like he's minor in comparison. Many atheists that I ran this by never heard of either....

Least he ain't in jail for fucking toddler boys. The way things are going, if you need to see a catholic priest go to a prison or a catholic-owned pedophile retreat.

Pretty soon, the guy that cuts your lawn will be saying your masses.

Catholic priests

I've never heard of her, but I don't speak for an entire community of people, so consensus is nice

edit: and if that was a knock on atheists, less than 1% of the imprisoned are atheists. try again

so the article basically assumes that the remaining 19% are atheists?

Yeah, that's a stretch.

No, it suggests that a significant portion of the 19% might be atheists.

As a known liar, you need to cite your sources. Link?

So, liar, it is actually the same report I cited, which based its overall percentage figures based solely on the people who responded, and excluded the nearly 20 percent who did not.

So if you add in the people who indicated no religious preference, the Catholic percentage would drop to about 25% -- representing the percentage of the population which is Catholic.

And, of course, it is true that probably the great majority of the 20% who did not respond lack a religious affiliation, and that's why they did not respond.

No wonder you didn't provide your link, D1Liar.

1) So what you are saying is that without the 20% who didn't respond, the Catholic percentage matches the percentage of population of the Catholics. That assumes a best case scenario, in which very few Catholics didn't respond. On the other hand, if even a small percentage of Catholics did not answer, then Catholics are over represented in prisons. :thumb:

2) Why in the world would you suppose that, "it is true that probably the great majority of the 20% who did not respond lack a religious affiliation"? That's an absurd assumption.

Many people don't respond to surveys for various reasons and Catholicism does not automatically exclude apathy. Some folks don't believe their religious preference is anyone's business. Perhaps, as a Catholic, they are feeling guilty of committing a crime and don't want to own up to that internal conflict. whatever the specific reasons, there are plenty of reasons why people of all backgrounds would not respond to a question about their religious affiliation.

To assume that the "great majority" of non-respondents are not religious is to ignore basic human behavior in order to generate a result that you desire.

The most logical reason that someone did not respond was because of a lack of a religious affiliation.

Period. To deny that fact is silly.

Coming from the guy who claimed that less than 1% of the incarcerated are atheists, citing to a report that also indicates that almost 20% indicated no religious affiliation.

:bad:

I guess the key question is how come the religiously unaffiliated are so remarkably over-represented in the prison population. :coffee:
