In the digital everything age we live in today, should the schools stop teaching cursive and concentrate that energy on other things?

I agree. I think that eliminating anything that has to do with spelling the English language is a bad idea.Ivytalk wrote:No. If we had an EMP attack that fried all the computers, people would have to communicate somehow. And many legal documents still require manual signatures.
And grammar. And punctuation. And algebra. And foreign languages. And...93henfan wrote:Cursive handwriting has already been heavily de-emphasized in most schools.
Of course, so has civility and accountability.
not teaching handwriting != not teaching cursiveIvytalk wrote:No. If we had an EMP attack that fried all the computers, people would have to communicate somehow. And many legal documents still require manual signatures.
They treach all that in my girls school still. Of course I pay through the nose for it.93henfan wrote:Cursive handwriting has already been heavily de-emphasized in most schools.

I said my girls, not me. I went to public school.Cluck U wrote:andy7171 wrote: They treach all that in my girls school still. Of course I pay through the nose for it.![]()
You obviously had enough money left over to buy an "r".
Unfortunately there is no requirement that you have to be able to read the signature. Many years a go I came across a legal document where the Corporate President's signaute looked like a drawing of a phone cord or a stretched out slinky. It looked more like spirograph than cursive.Ivytalk wrote:No. If we had an EMP attack that fried all the computers, people would have to communicate somehow. Did anyone that spoke ebonics know how to read or write? For that matter, did anyone speak ebonics?Grizo406 wrote:What about Ebonics?
My handwriting sucked until I started printing in all caps. Of course younger generations will probably want to know why I'm yelling all the time.JohnStOnge wrote:Yes. If you write something by hand it's better to print anyway in order to make sure everyone can read what you say. I frankly don't know why cursive ever arose to begin with. I guess it allows someone to write a little faster but printed handwritten text has always been easier to read. On average anyway. I suppose there are some people who print in a manner that's not readable. But it's not as bad as the situation with cursive is.
Boxed wine FTW.Vidav wrote:Cursive is pointless and a waste of time. The only thing most people do in it is their signature and your signature can be anything.
It's like using corks for wine, we only do it because it's tradition. The new way is better but people fight it because they are dumb.

My guess is that it was easier to use an ink dipped pen if you didn't have to lift the pen off of the paper every time your transitioned from one letter to the next. Now that we have ball point pens there is no need for cursive.JohnStOnge wrote:Yes. If you write something by hand it's better to print anyway in order to make sure everyone can read what you say. If you put a good wine into a box I'm sure it would be fine. But that white zin crap is just wrong.Grizalltheway wrote:Well, I guess we know who the REAL snob in this thread is.Vidav wrote:
