North America has only 6 percent of the world's population, but 34 percent all the human biomass in the world that is due to obesity, the researchers said. In contrast, Asia has 61 percent of the world's population, but only 13 percent of the world's biomass due to obesity.

Obviously there are a lot smarter people than I working on this study and the numbers, but something doesn't add up...
The average body mass, globally, was 136 pounds (62 kilograms.) In North America, which has the highest average body mass of any continent, the number was 178 pounds (80.7 kg).
North America has only 6 percent of the world's population, but 34 percent all the human biomass in the world that is due to obesity
I just don't see how something that is 6% of the equation and only 30% heavier than average can have such an impact to increase their share of the pie by 567%. Maybe they multiplied by 6.93.

Either way, we should stop eating pie.

Reread.
The first figure is just talking about average weight. The second figure is looking at only obesity.

Depends on what the definition of obese is...
Case in point: I worked for a mortgage company about 10 years ago that offered health insurance as a benefit. The representative of one of the big 3 came in and told the HR person that my rates would be higher because I was "obese." At the time I was 5'11" 205 lbs with 48" chest and 34" waist, and playing CF and batting leadoff for Team Easton.
My reply to the young lady was this, "If whoever came up with your chart can beat me in a foot race then I'm obese."
The point was that I was lifting weights at least 4 days a week, playing 150+ games of softball a year, and running my ass off year around. I certainly wasn't obese but their chart of height/weight said I was.

Two questions:
1) Why is the CDC STILL using that pig-****, discredited BMI scale?
2) Do all other countries also use that or do they actually measure body fat?

I guess I just don't get it. It seems to say the average weight in the US is 30% higher than the global average, but the US's share of the total weight is 567% higher than it's share of the population.

The second one isn't the US's share of total weight... but, the US's share of obesity.
