The Justice Department ordered Florida’s elections division to halt a systematic effort to find and purge the state’s voter rolls of noncitizen voters.

Florida’s effort appears to violate both the 1965 Voting Rights Act, which protects minorities, and the 1993 National Voter Registration Act – which governs voter purges – T. Christian Herren Jr., the Justice Department’s lead civil rights lawyer, wrote in a detailed two-page letter sent late Thursday night.

THe 15th Amendment upholds the rights of citizens.

Section 1. The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.

To spot noncitizens, though, the state began comparing voter rolls with a Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicle database that contains some citizenship information that the agency collects when people get a state ID such as a driver’s license.

But the citizenship data in many cases is out of date. That is, many people become citizens after they get their ID and then register to vote. But the highway safety database isn’t updated.

As a result, the state has performed its own checking and double-checking and winnowed down a pool of 180,000 potential noncitizens to a list of about 2,700. It is asking the counties to contact the voters by mail. Those who don’t respond within about two months of being contacted could be stricken from the rolls.

Rick Scott is VIOLATING THE LAW in several ways.

1) His list of "ineligbile voters" is flat out wrong - it has been PROVEN that he is trying to kick US CITIZENS off the voting roles - including some 90+ year old veterans.

2) Law prohibits doing these type of purges less than 90 days before a primary or general election.


Rick Scott and his cronies are committing VOTING FRAUD. AG Holder is rightfully protecting the voting rights of US CITIZENS.

I'm afraid you are the one who is fibbing. The veteran you are speaking of was not ruled ineligible. He was simply asked to provide documentation of citizenship, which he did. He is eligible to vote (but only once per election).

The process began well before the 90 day window. Therefore, no problem.

How could Holder be protecting the voting rights of U.S. citizens when the whole purpose of his demands is to stop a purge of ineligible voters? Every time an ineligible voter votes, the vote of an eligible voter is negated.

A while back I stumbled onto a website that tracks peoples voting history. Not who they voted for, but whether they voted or not. Found my info on there and it correctly listed all the recent elections that I have voted in.

Seems to me that if we can keep track of voters after the fact, we should be able to do it ahead of time as well. Part of the registration process should be to get photographed. Every voter will have a picture ID, but also their picture will be stored in a database that can be accessed in case the photo is lost.

It shouldn't be that hard to track voters. When JFK said that we were going to the moon, we did it in less than 10 years. Bush v Gore happened 12 years ago and Florida is still fucked up.

Quit generalizing, kalm. That's not always true. It depends on the area. Sure, there are SOME areas where that is true. But not here in Cali. The fewer people show up, the more likely it is HERE that the Donkeys will win.

But even that is a globalization that doesn't apply everywhere. If everything in my area were kept internal, this is a GOP area, so the GOP should win every time. The problem is that until last year, our districts were so gerrymandered that Democrats in other areas beat us through sheer numbers. We have yet to see if that will still hold true after the recent re-districting done by a theoretically neutral citizen's board, which took that responsibility from the Legislature via referendum. In terms of broad areas as well, especially in years when turnout is bleak, uber-Democrat areas like Los Angeles and San Francisco have the sheer numbers to overwhelm traditionally Republican areas like the Central Valley and San Diego.

Everyone who pays taxes should be allowed to vote. If you don't pay taxes, you can't vote.
