Terrible story. Cop shouldn't be allowed to carry a gun.

I think it's a tragic mistake but it's also an example of why I don't think there should be the paradighm where cops can get violent because someone doesn't immediately comply with what they want done. I don't like the fact that an innocent citizen can't question police actions or that citizens have to comply with police orders regardless of the circumstances.

I think the first time this really hit me was when I saw a video of a situation in which police showed up at the wrong house and some guy was out in his driveway spraying his lawn with a hose. He questioned them and they beat the snot out of him.

No. I realize it's difficult but the police shouldn't be designated as little dictators such that when they say "jump" a citizen of the United States has to say "how high." They work for us. We don't work for them. And they are not our rulers.

Here is the police cam video. You can't see the shooting, but you can hear everything. The cop is a real asshole. He actually tells the guy that his dog should be on a leash - in the guys yard. What a tool.

Seriously though, if the dog wasn't inside a fence, barking and running at the cop, 9 times out of 10 the dog is getting shot. These guys have a split second to assess the situation and react. It is unfortunate he was at the wrong address, the dog owner will no doubtedly get compensated for his loss and emotional damage, especially now it's gone viral. I certainly don't wish for this cop to get gunned down in the future.
Step back and realize IT'S A FUCKING DOG. Accidents happen.

Accidents are more likely to happen when you put a person in a position that they aren't prepared for. Like giving a moron a gun and telling him that he's a cop.

I don't want to see the guy get shot, but he should lose his job. I'm glad that he doesn't work near me and I'd hate to be his partner. I really like how he tries to blame the dog owner, even arguing with him after the incident, as if the guy should have been prepared for what happened.

I'm pretty sure that if I shot a K-9 cop claiming self defense wouldn't work. But somehow it's okay for cops to come on to private property and shoot the resident dog. I guess we should be happy that the 50 pound dog didn't kill the big cop.
