The United States Census Bureau estimates that America will be "minority white" by 2042.

The under-eighteen demographic is expected to go the same route by 2023, largely thanks to the declining birth rate among white Americans compared with Hispanic and Asian Americans. The number of white children in the United States actually shrank by 4.3 million from 2000-2010, while the number of Hispanic and Asian children grew by a total of 5.5 million during that same period, with Hispanics making up the bulk of this growth.

Also, for the first time in national history, the majority of young people in two states, California and New Mexico, now identify as Hispanic, according to census data released this year



Meanwhile, in Nevada, Arizona, Texas, Mississippi, Georgia, Florida, Maryland, and Hawaii, white children are already in the minority when compared with peers from other racial and ethnic groups combined..

In places like California, where the shift has been coming since the 1960s, the sea change is being met with less resistance than in other states like Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, and South Carolina, partially because the influx is happening so quickly in the latter states. South Carolina's Hispanic population increased 148% between 2000 and 2010, faster than any other state during that period, while California's Hispanic population only increased by 28%.

While figures like this generally prompt some kind of severe knee-jerk reaction about immigration, I would point out that, until the mid-1900s, America was much more of the "melting pot" it claimed to be. In 1910, 15% of people in the U.S. were born in another country — by 1970, that number had dropped to just 5%. It only recently got back up over 12%.

I'll spare everybody the standard lefty, Howard Zinn rant about how the white man stole this country from indigenous peoples, built it up with immigrants, and then started bitching about country-stealing furriners. But I'd rather leave you with this beautiful quote that dispenses with the whole conflict quickly and elegantly:

Well, it's not ALL bad news. If we can just get it so that Asians make up the bulk of the growth the country should be OK.

In all seriousness, though, when one looks at stuff like that NAEP test score stuff I'm always talking about one would have to say that the demographic trend you're talking about is not good news for the country or its ability to compete. People can say that's "racist" all they want but it's just true. Unless something happens to change the variation associated with ethnicity in all aptitudes but especially in math and science aptitudes one would have to say that the United States will degrade in those terms as the ethnicity shifts in the predicted fashion.

There's no way, if one is objective and isn't driven by egalitarian philosophy, to reach any other conclusion.

Plus it probably means the balance of power will shift even more towards the Democratic Party and that will make things even worse.

Meh.

Whites have been in the minority in San Joaquin County for years.

Just the truth. I'll use the NAEP 8th Grade Math test again..in this case mostly because it has a longer history than the 12th Grade Math test so you can see how things have changed over time.

Here's how average score went by ethnic group in 1990:

Asian 275
White 270
Hispanic 246
Black 237

Here's how it went by ethnic group 21 years later in 2011:

Asian 303
White 293
Hispanic 270
Black 262

The NAEP site indicates that in 1990 "Accommodations were not permitted for this assessment." That may be a factor in the fact that every group's score improved. And every group could've improved to some extent.

But the point is that the relative positions of the groups and the gaps between them didn't change that much. Whites scored an average of 23 points higher than Hispanics in 1990 then 24 points higher in 2011. They scored 31 points higher on average than Blacks in 1990 and 33 points higher in 2011. To do it properly I'd have to put it in terms of standard deviations but the picture wouldn't change so I won't put you through that.

I've already showed you guys numerous times that quantitatively measurable environmental factors can't account for the differences between ethnic groups. If you had to bet, looking at how little things have changed in terms of those test scores over the past 21 years, would you bet things are going to change substantilly with respect to the relative performance of those four ethnic groups by 2042?

See, this is why I am skeptical about that study in the other thread about "low effort thought" resulting in conservative positions. Liberals, progressives, whatever you want to call them...are only interested in reality when reality fits their pre-conceived world view with respect to things like egalitarianism and environmentalism. Real, hard numbers like those referenced above won't be accepted by them because they don't fit in with what they wish to believe.

There is no way...none...that somebody could look at those numbers and not think that there is going to be a down side for the United States if the trend in changing ethnic demographics continues. It's just the truth.

I mean, it's not going to be the end of the world. There will still be plenty of people good at math. But the average math aptitude of the US population is going to be lower than it would be if the proportions were to stay the same as they are now or move in the other direction. And, though I wont' post the numbers, the same is true of science aptitudes.

And suppose it's all cultural as an egalitarian would immediately contend? Would that make it any better? Do you have any reason to think that the cultural factors that ostensibly lead to substantially lower math and science aptitudes are going to change enough before 2042 to think that what I'm predicting won't happen?

The bigger question is how will the US economy continue to function without all the cheap labor that has been propping it up since its inception? Don't hire the cheap illegal labor and it stops coming. Nothing new here.
