If someone had a Muslim father, lived in a Muslim country, went to a Muslim school, and had the middle name Hussein to boot, what is surprising is that more people don't think he was a muslim. (And no, I don't think Obama is now a muslim, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was in his youth).

I had two christian parents, my name literally means "christ bearer", and grew up in a christian country.
I'm not a christian.

I don't know if "stupid" is the problem but there's no question that people are ill informed. One recent example on this board is the civics test our friend from Harvard posted. The average score of college educators... COLLEGE EDUCATORS...was 55% correct. If you go take that test and see the questions you will see that that's horrifying.
I can remember driving to work early in the morning in the early 1990s and hearing the results of a poll of Ivy League students. That's the creme de la creme intelligence wise. But the majority of them couldn't name a SINGLE justice on the Supreme Court at the time. How isolated from what's going on do you have to be to not be able to name a SINGLE justice on the Supreme Court?
Another one: When I was working in Brunswick, Georgia, in the 1980s I heard a report on a poll where the majority of people in Jacksonville, FL, could not name the two countries that border the contiguous United States. The next day I came to work and laughingly told our receptionist about it. She asked, "What are they?" She didn't know.
We who lurk on message boards like this are engaged. We may disagree with each other, but we all pay attention. Most people apparently do not.

Like the band members at Southern Miss - who, when a Puerto Rican born player for Louisville was at the free throw line, starting chanting "where's your green card"?
Dumb shits in college don't know that Puerto Ricans are U.S. Citizens...

Newsflash: Voters ARE stupid, very stupid, very, very stupid. Jeezus, tell me something I don't fucking know already.
Who in the hell can dispute that? Al Franken is a senator, Barney Frank was able to retire in office, Jesse Ventura was a governor, Joe Biden would have been "senator for life" if he wasn't VP, that asshole Levin from Michigan will die in office, Pelosi actually is STILL in office, Harry Reid is still in office, Maxine Waters and Corrine Brown are tenured members of congress, the asshat from SC and the KKK guy from WV both died in office, Barack Obama has a 40-ish % approval rating... and I could go on and on and on.

I would actually agree with kalm here. There's no such thing as a "Moslem" name. Those are Arabic names. If one traces the history of the Middle East, one would see that there is a great tradition of Arabic Christians in that region, the vast majority of whom have Arabic names that look the same as what most here in the States would term "Moslem" names because the names have nothing to do with a religion but an ethnic culture.
Additionally, as kalm shows, one does NOT have to follow in the footsteps of one's parents in religion, job, or anything else. Sure, good parentage in a religion, a craft, or just about anything else would give one a good foundation for that, but there is nothing required about that.

But did you also go to a Christian school? Were you a Christian in your youth?
Its not unreasonable to suspect that someone with a Christian parent, with a Christian sounding name, lived in a majority Christian country for several years, also went to a Christian school for 2 years, might be a Christian. Of course that person might NOT BE, but if you were playing the odds..
Obama says he's not a muslim, and even though he would have a reason to lie about it if he was, that would be something too difficult to conceal if he had been a practicing muslim as an adult. People would have come forward. So I don't think there's is any chance he is a muslim now or ever was one as an adult.
In his youth I'm not so sure about...

1... even if true... who give a flying fuck?
2. glad to know you are "asking questions"

Double up on #1 there. How in the fuck would that matter?
The people were asked if they thought he was a muslim apparently? That question pertains to what he is presently. So again don't see how it can be taken any other way than to assume complete dullardry of that 40%.
The pollster called it exactly it is.
