US says North Korea agrees to nuclear moratorium
By msnbc.com news services
The United States said on Wednesday that North Korea had agreed to implement a moratorium on nuclear tests, long-range missile launches and nuclear activities including enrichment at its Yongbyon nuclear complex and to allow U.N. nuclear watchdog inspectors in to ensure compliance.
The State Department said that the United States in return had agreed to finalize details of a proposed food aid package and to take other steps to improve bilateral ties.
"The United States still has profound concerns regarding North Korean behavior across a wide range of areas, but today's announcement reflects important, if limited, progress in addressing some of these," a State Department statement said.
Separately, the North's KCNA news agency confirmed Pyongyang had agreed to a moratorium on nuclear tests, long-range missile launches and enrichment of uranium at its Yongbyon nuclear facility.
The North would also allow inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency to monitor the moratorium on enrichment, the news agency said.
It said North Korea had made the decisions in response to a U.S. request and "with a view to maintaining positive atmosphere" for what it described as high-level North Korean U.S. talks.
Note the highlighted above, people, and compare to Conk saber-rattling of years past. President Obama is working to create a worldwide environment of peace based on dialogue, one that will ultimately be successful.

Israeli officials say they won't warn the U.S. if they decide to launch a pre-emptive strike against Iranian nuclear facilities, according to one U.S. intelligence official familiar with the discussions. The pronouncement, delivered in a series of private, top-level conversations, sets a tense tone ahead of meetings in the coming days at the White House and Capitol Hill.
Israeli officials said that if they eventually decide a strike is necessary, they would keep the Americans in the dark to decrease the likelihood that the U.S. would be held responsible for failing to stop Israel's potential attack. The U.S. has been working with the Israelis for months to persuade them that an attack would be only a temporary setback to Iran's nuclear program.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak delivered the message to a series of top-level U.S. visitors to the country, including the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the White House national security adviser and the director of national intelligence, and top U.S. lawmakers, all trying to close the trust gap between Israel and the U.S. over how to deal with Iran's nuclear ambitions.

And, what is wrong with that, Hen? Is that not something America does? Are we not proud of that tradition of humanitarian aid? Is it the "yellow" skin of the recipients that bothers you?

You missed the point. They stopped because they wanted/needed something, not because they decided to be nice.

No, Kim Il Cat, it's not. It's the breathtaking stupidity of those who, like Obama and you, think that "bilateral talks" with the NorKors will achieve anything but a Mighty Wind.

No, I think you're missing my point, though yours has validity.
But, so what? Getting food to oppressed peoples is as American as apple pie and I, for one, don't care under what auspices it's carried out. Actually, the whole thing is rather Catholic-y, isn't it, feeding the poor and all that?

You're absolutely right, IT. With attitudes like that, I cannot help but agree with you.

And if you believe that all that food will go to help "oppressed peoples," I have a slightly used Bentley I'd like to sell you.

Why those clever North Koreans of course.
These people don't even wear shoes and you're whimpering about how
we're getting played? Your bleating would be better spent warning us about the Pakistanis.
That's where the highest probability of a military nuclear incident resides.

In case you've been asleep for the last 20 years-
It isn't the shoeless stunted population of the DRK we are dealing with. This is an issue of proliferation, not potential DRK aggression.
The DRK has been exporting its nuke tech to a lot of countries, including Iran. It is also interesting that you mention Pakistan, because that country has had a very special relationship with North Korea over ballistic missile and nuke weapons development.
We ARE getting played. every few years North Korea starts to beat the drums, and every time a new administration kowtows to them and offers food aid for a nuclear moratorium; food aid which NEVER goes to the DRK general population... it goes straight to the military and the political toadies of the Kim regime.
The reason we do this at all is because people understand intrinsically that North Korea sells its weapons technologies to anyone willing to pay for it, and in recent years that has been Syria, Iran, Pakistan and others.
And.. Obama IS being played, just like every President before him since the DRK has been a nuclear threat. If you think different, then how much money are you willing to put on North Korea honoring this latest "moratorium"?

Anytime there is a chance for peace through dialogue, we are irresponsible if we don't take it, violin playing or not. The people who look like assholes are the North Koreans pols and mils when they do the switcheroos, not us.
Yes, it's gotta end, but there is something to be said for the "turning the other cheek" stuff. Be firm, be relentless. If it means peace, we gotta go after it.

All countries play all other countries all the time, we call it diplomacy. All countries keep their word for as long as it is in their interest to do so. North Korea will honor this moratorium until they decide it is in their interest not to. Syria, Iran, and Pakistan will continue to proliferate regardless of North Korea; Iran and Pakistan already are more advanced nuclearly than North Korea and will keep advancing their programs and increasing proliferation even if North Korea disappears tomorrow.
Obviously the trick is to find a way to bypass the NK government and get our food to the general population. Our aging B52 fleet is the answer. First we produce several hundred million kimchi MREs, then we begin distributing them via B-52 throughout the land. Everywhere. We carpet bomb the whole country with kimchi MREs to the point that any peasant walking through the countryside is bound to trip over them. Suddenly the populace is well fed and the government is irrelevant because the troops no longer have to serve in order to get a meal every day.
