Gov. Chris Christie has followed through on his promise to reject a bill allowing same-sex marriage in New Jersey by quickly vetoing the measure Friday.

The veto came a day after the state Assembly passed the bill. The state Senate had passed it on Monday. Christie, a Republican who opposes same-sex marriage, had vowed "very swift action" once the bill reached his desk.

Maine will be voting on gay marriage this fall. It failed 53%-47% in 2009 after a very nasty campaign financed by the Catholic and Mormon churches and the organization behind Yes on 1 in CA. Mainers were NOT happy that they never released their list of donors and they still haven't to this day even though a court ruled against them.......gonna be interesting to see what happens this fall.

So if gays have equal legal rights with civil unions, but can't get "married," what's the problem? The answer is that they want to be recognized as moral equals to straights. What else could it be? Let's be candid about this.

The frequency with which people call somebody else "bigoted" in the middle of their own expression of bigotry amazes me.

And thereby clearly deviated from how the equal protection clause was understood when it was ratified, BTW. We know that because a number of Northern states that ratified the 14th Amendment contnued to segregate schools after it went into effect. As Robert Bork wrote in his book, The Tempting of America, "The inescapble fact is that those who ratified the fourteenth Amendment did not think it outlawed segregated education or segregation in any aspect of life."

But I know we have become accustomed to the Supreme Court inventing Constitutional requirements and/or prohibitions that don't really exist.

So the main point should be that, again: If one defines marriage at all one has to exclude some arrangements and somebody doesn't get "equal protection" in the sense that the Warren Court made up. Which is probably an example of a good reason why the Brown Court shouldn't have made it up. They intentionally misinterpreted the Constitution because the ends justified the means but it also opened Pandora's Box and now "equal protection" can be used for just about anything.
