GM once dominated the global auto industry, but for years churned out vehicles that sold at a loss to keep production lines running and to honor union employment contracts. When the recession hit, the company toppled into bankruptcy and was in danger of liquidation prior to a massive bailout by the federal government. GM lost about $100 billion in the years before the 2009 bankruptcy and bailout, but has been consistently profitable since the restructuring.
Wonder how the unions feel about that?
GM has repaid $24.1 billion of the $49.5 billion in federal government aid it received. The repayments include the proceeds from the automaker's public stock offering. The government would have to get more than $50 a share for its remaining holdings to recoup what it put into the business. In early trading, GM shares rose $1.10, or 4%, to $26.
Remind me again how much was lost on the bank bailout?

Curious on the GM front... wasn't the bailout of GM first done in December 2008?

As of Feb 10, between General Motors (27+ billion) AND GMAC (General Motors Acceptance Corporation, now Ally Financial) (11 billion), adding up the dispersed, returned and revenue to govt, the taxpayers are still over 38 billion in the hole, and will never be close to being made whole again.

I am pretty sure if someone gave me a few million dollars, I could make a profit of a few hundred thousand.

How much of the drop in unemployment applications is due to people running out of their benefits and actually getting a job? The unemployment rate amongst those with a degree is still around 5%. Looks to me as if the extended benefits of unemployment has run it's course and people are finally getting off their butts and getting a job instead of sucking the government teat.
I say this because my neighbor was out of a job for about two years and just as his unemployment benefits were to expire, he suddenly got a job.

GM will be in a ditch again with its hand out in no time. Those overpriced Chevy Volts are flying out of the showrooms -- right back to the factories on recall!

Says the man who was driving a GM product when I last saw him.
On a totally unrelated note, it looks like my new Jeep may be getting some major engine work soon. Thanks Chrysler.

Looks like he's still focused like a laser on jobs
Obama Schedule || Thursday, February 16, 2012 — White House Dossier
10:05 am || Delivers remarks at a fundraiser; Corona Del Mar, Calif.
11:45 am || Departs Los Angeles
12:50 pm || Arrives San Francisco
2:00 pm || Attends a fundraiser; San Francisco Intercontinental Hotel
7:10 pm || Delivers remarks at a fundraiser; private residence, San Francisco
9:00 pm || Delivers remarks at a fundraiser; Nob Hill Masonic Center
The sobering reality: just 55.3 percent of Americans between 16 and 29 have jobs. And earlier this year, Americans’ student loan debt surpassed credit card debt for the first time ever.
