I remember going to the annual Lee-Jackson Day Dinner held by the Virginia Democratic Party in the mid 1960's when I was a page to the General Assembly. It was a really big deal for the party hieracrhy. Do they still hold that or have they given up on multi-culturalism? :ohno:

Back in the heady days of Senator Harry Flood Byrd, LeadBolt? Not many others on this board are old enough to remember him.

Interesting that this holiday is slotted the Friday before MLK Day. :-P

Don't forget his side kick Senator Absalom Willis Robertson, father of Patrick. Back in the days the the Democratic Party was the party of Rome, Rum and Rebellion and champion of the voting rights act. A box of red delicious apples from the Byrd orchards arrived faithfully the week before Christmas every year during that time frame even though we were more in the Mills Godwin-Bill Spong mold.

BTW, Virginia was one of the first states to recognize MLK Day, but assigned it a different day, Jan. 1. That was not received well. Lee-Jackson Day had become a holiday in VA in 1889 and was originally celebrated Jan. 19.
