This has been in the news, so no doubt it's already a thread somewhere on this site. Regradless of that, how is the hell do we not put a self destruct sequence on these drones? Better yet, if the Iranians hacked into our plan, then why can't we hack into OUR plan and fly it out or at least destroy it somehow? Why can't we hack into the GPS, get it's coordinates and fucking bomb the building? Obama asked for it back and "we'll see how they respond". I think anyone that has an inkling of our relationship with Iran can tell you that they aren't going to give it back.

What would I have done?

1) not acknowledge that we lost a drone
2) deny its our drone, stating it's propaghanda
3) get the location and destroy the drone.
4) kick Lockheed and the PO in the ass for not securing that network enough and for not giving it an Self Destruct sequence
5) find out why the controller/monitor of the Drone didn't try to override the hack or at least destroy it.

Allegedly did have a self-destruct phase, but it failed. Lowest bidder thing, I think.

I haven't read anything that says it does. Everything I've read and heard stated there is no destruct phase. I'm very interested to know how this plays out, especially with our withdrawl from The Iraq.

Based on what I have seen and read, it doesn't look like Iran's possession of the drone is that big of a concern at this point.

The materials used are going to be similar to other examples the Chinese and Russians have already had their hands on before. The two key tech components that would be damaging to lose would be the materials science and the software. On the materials side, anyone with a mass spectrometer can tell what the composition of a given alloy is, but actually being able to synthesize those materials is where the real secrets lie, and reverse engineering doesn't work there (that's why Russia and China's new "stealth" fighters are still dogs compared to the F-22 and F-35). Secondly, any proprietary software on board a drone is going to have tamper-proof measures. You don't have to "self-destruct" a drone in order to make it useless to your enemies.

Personally, I think that we have taken what is a small intel loss and turned it into a circus, and Obama made it laughable by asking nicely that the Iranians return the drone. That's some real "smart power" there, Bubba.

I guess the political risk of dialing up a few Tomahawks to take out the wreckage was too high? Could have had 'em onsite in under an hour. I guess we were worried about blowing up any Iranian yahoos that showed up.
