Ten thousand combat veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder flooded into VA hospitals every three months this year, pushing the number of patients ill with the disorder above 200,000 and straining resources, Department of Veterans Affairs data to be released today show.

The increase is more than 5% per quarter, according to data obtained by USA TODAY, and it occurs as the VA struggles to move veterans quickly into therapy. New mental health patients at about a third of VA hospitals wait longer than the department's goal of 14 days or less, according to a USA TODAY analysis published this month.

I've watched the data trends here: VA spending has increased nearly 200% since 2001; from less than 40 billion a year to nearly 120 billion a year. By comparison, Department of Defense spending has increased roughly 100% since 2001. Spending on defense R&D is nearly the same amount spent on ventrans entitlements.

Personnell costs are soaring, currently costing over 300 billion a year... the generous entitlement package (for retirees, disabled and current) gobbles up nearly 2/3 of the personnel costs, which is expected to grow at alarming rates. War in the developed world is becoming unaffordable.

I joined with the intention of not making it a career. I wanted to join the Marines, do manly shit, and then get out after four years. It ended up being six, but I still got out. I knocked out all the stuff I wanted, namely to go through boot camp at Parris Island, serve as an enlisted Marine, go through OCS, serve as an Officer of Marines, shoot dozens of fun weapons I'd never get the opportunity to otherwise, expend hundreds of thousands of free rounds, and detonate various explosives.

I also recall during my transition assistance program (or TAP) course during the final days of my contract that there was a VA rep there. They were advising the outprocessing Marines to get whatever disability they could. I had lost a significant amount of hearing between my entry and exit physicals and could have claimed a disability, but I had no desire to do so and did not.

Well, I disagree sharply with pretty much all of you, but I will proudly defend(up to and including my life) your right to say it.

Anywho I love the donks who piss and moan about the military, I challenge you to go live in iran awhile and see how enjoyable it is FOR A MAN under a theocracy, which is probably what would happen here with no military, and not your socialistic regime. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Exact same thing happened to me on my TAP interview. Could have claimed a hearing disability and gotten about 25% disabled rated, but chose not to. Seemed like an unnecessary waste of money at the time. Now that my hearing (at 49) is failing rapidly and severe tinnitis is setting in, I'm beginning to regret that decision.

Yep, if it wasn't for our military D1B would have never had been molested by a priest in his younger days as we'd all be speaking German or Japanese.
