Basically holding that law enforcement has become corrupted and out of whack in terms of its priorities by virtue of the fact that there are financial incentives for pursuing the "Drug War."

Like the wars on "poverty" and "terrorism", the "war on drugs" is nothing more than a P.R. effort by both political parties...and a drain on our economy...

You cannot fight a thing...and the more government money you focus on a nebulous thing, the more corruption you develop by people with an interest in extending that "war"...

Police departments have been talking about this issue for years. It is nothing new.

Police administrators love seizures and will toe the line when talking about narco enforcement. Rank and file officers are largely for legalization of most narcotics that are currently illegal.

That's a solid article.

Recently, in response to Ron Paul's assertion that the drug war has failed, Gingrich was asked about his solution to this problem. Gingrich's answer to the failed drug war: put your boot on the neck of drug users:
"I think that we need to consider taking more explicit steps to make it expensive to be a drug user. It could be through testing before you get any kind of federal aid. Unemployment compensation, food stamps, you name it."
Small business loans, farm aid, disaster relief, heating assistance, food stamps, early childhood education, student loans, GI Bill, VA health and disability benefits, children's health insurance... that's a lot of testing, we'll soon need a separate cabinet level department.

Surprised he didn't suggest making drug use a capital offense.

While you've had your head buried firmly up your ass in recent months, more has been done to "ruin" this nation in the past 30 months than in the past 30 YEARS combined.

Newt going bat-sheet crazy:
If you’re serious about the latter view, then we need to think through a strategy that makes it radically less likely that we’re going to have drugs in this country. Places like Singapore have been the most successful at doing that. They’ve been very draconian. And they have communicated with great intention that they intend to stop drugs from coming into their country.
Yes, Newt, they kill them.

Wonderful, can't wait for 2012.

Newt loves the way Singapore deals with drugs....

According to Amnesty International, about 420 people have been hanged in Singapore since 1991, mostly for drugs offences.

Well... if you're going to guess...

IMO, if Missoula had the same kill em' all drug laws as Singapore.... Griz attendance would be much reduced. Just my humble first hand personal enjoyable experience.

Add this to my looooong list of reason why I want to see narcotics legalized:

Reason #23856: So we can tax the sh!t out of D1B's mary jane ciggies and spend the money on healthcare for the bums down at the shelta.

The war on drugs is pathetic. It's a medical issue. When you criminalize something we can all grow in our backyard that is less harmful than booze the demand for it is going to create situations like following and the resulting narco-industrial complex that goes along with it.

Btw, nice catch on the 420, GATW, this ones for you and check the guys name. 8-)
Rancher Held Onto Land But Landed In Prison -- Marijuana Operation Was Apparently Seen As Road Out Of Debt
AP
ODESSA, Lincoln County - Folks in Lincoln County knew Bud King as a man who took risks trying to hang onto the family's cattle ranch.

But in an apparent attempt to get out from under heavy debt so he could leave the spread to his sons, King took one risk too many.

Yesterday, the 59-year-old grandfather and second-generation rancher began serving a five-year prison term at Geiger Corrections Center near Spokane for his role in the biggest marijuana-growing operation to come to authorities' attention in state history.

King's arrest during a Sept. 9 raid on the King Brothers Ranch stunned neighbors who knew him as a man with a big stride, a cowboy hat, a can of chewing tobacco and a kerchief hanging out of the back pocket of his jeans.

"Everybody in town was really shocked, and they're still talking about it," said Denny McDaniel, mayor in this community of about 1,000 people. "That kind of thing just doesn't happen here."

Agents seized 6,000 mature marijuana plants in the raid. The high-grade Indigo marijuana hybrid had been grown between rows of corn on the 2,000-acre ranch since 1988, prosecutors said.
