Skeptic finds he now agrees global warming is real
AP By SETH BORENSTEIN -
WASHINGTON (AP) — A prominent physicist and skeptic of global warming spent two years trying to find out if mainstream climate scientists were wrong. In the end, he determined they were right: Temperatures really are rising rapidly.
The study of the world's surface temperatures by Richard Muller was partially bankrolled by a foundation connected to global warming deniers. He pursued long-held skeptic theories in analyzing the data. He was spurred to action because of "Climategate," a British scandal involving hacked emails of scientists.
Yet he found that the land is 1.6 degrees warmer than in the 1950s. Those numbers from Muller, who works at the University of California, Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, match those by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and NASA.
He said he went even further back, studying readings from Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. His ultimate finding of a warming world, to be presented at a conference Monday, is no different from what mainstream climate scientists have been saying for decades.
What's different, and why everyone from opinion columnists to "The Daily Show" is paying attention is who is behind the study.
One-quarter of the $600,000 to do the research came from the Charles Koch Foundation, whose founder is a major funder of skeptic groups and the tea party. The Koch brothers, Charles and David, run a large privately held company involved in oil and other industries, producing sizable greenhouse gas emissions.

Oops is right. One of Muller's colleagues is accusing him of hiding data.
Scientist who said climate change sceptics had been proved wrong accused of hiding truth by colleague
Professor Richard Muller, of Berkeley University in California, and his colleagues from the Berkeley Earth Surface Temperatures project team (BEST) claimed to have shown that the planet has warmed by almost a degree centigrade since 1950 and is warming continually......
But today The Mail on Sunday can reveal that a leading member of Prof Muller’s team has accused him of trying to mislead the public by hiding the fact that BEST’s research shows global warming has stopped.
Prof Judith Curry, who chairs the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at America’s prestigious Georgia Institute of Technology, said that Prof Muller’s claim that he has proven global warming sceptics wrong was also a ‘huge mistake’, with no scientific basis.
Prof Curry is a distinguished climate researcher with more than 30 years experience and the second named co-author of the BEST project’s four research papers. .....
n fact, Prof Curry said, the project’s research data show there has been no increase in world temperatures since the end of the Nineties – a fact confirmed by a new analysis that The Mail on Sunday has obtained.
‘There is no scientific basis for saying that warming hasn’t stopped,’ she said. ‘To say that there is detracts from the credibility of the data, which is very unfortunate. .....

There are also stories claiming that Muller is not really a "skeptic" as he claims.

Clearly the portion of the study that implicates human activity in global warming was suppressed by the Koch brothers.

Koch gets rich on one side of the arguement, Algore gets rich on the otherside.
Koch refinery employs a lot of people in this area. If you see a cloud crossing the highway by the refinery, my buddies that work their, say don't drive through it, it's not good.

1.6 degrees higher in 60 years? Is this really cause for concern?

I don't know with sea levels, currents, and weather and such.

I must have missed the part where he says this warming is anthropogenic.
There are not many AGW sceptics who claim that the earth is not warming. The scepticism is in the cause, not the phenomenon itself.
The minute political influence peddlers (from EITHER side) come up in a scientific debate, I stop reading. This article is politically slanted (as is 99% of all media on the AGW debate).

I read about this scam on icecap.us several weeks ago. BTW, AP "reporter" Seth Borenstein is a paid pro-global warming shill...he's no more a journalist than is Rush Limbaugh.
Next.

Imagine if this topic hadn't been political from the get-go, it probably would've been some interesting scientific work. However, this has been political from the get go and continues to be all about politics. Oh well.

Al Gore did more damage to the issue than any corporate interest.
If drastic climate change is in our future, and it is indeed anthropogenic, then Al Gore could not have harmed the cause more if he had been intentionally trying to do so. It almost makes me think that we need to leave the causes with the actors and musicians and have the politicos stay out of it.
I would love to see some real science on the matter, but it is difficult to sift through. That the entire scientific process has been depth charged, and one needs look no further than the term "settled science" to see this.
There is rarely a such thing as settled science.
The last time there was accepted consensus on "settled science", it was over the theory of general relativity, which, among other things, holds that the speed of light is an uncrossable boundary for matter. Yet, just a couple months ago, we have discovered and measured a neutrino traveling faster than light.

I usually only read the first 2 or 3 words of your posts...so NO warming? Is that the jist of your post Pols?

I have noticed that when it's clear this time of year, the over-night temperatures are lower and we get frost on the pumpkin. This doesn't happen as much when it's overcast. I also see a bunch of shit being sent into the air. Could be coincidence though.
