Pick the exact date and hour of when (not if) a deal will be cut that "ends" the debt ceiling "crisis."
I'll say Saturday, July 30, at 3 p.m. -- in time for preparation of self-aggrandizing press releases on both sides before the evening news cycle.

Too fractured for a quick agreement - unless Obama unilaterally lifts the ceiling (which may actually prompt an impeachment vote in the House) my guess is that they go past the 8/2 deadline, watch the market correct itself well under 10,000, and then get called into emergency session after the scheduled 8/8 start of the summer recess. Only then will they hammer out an agreement, in the face of missed fundraising, campaigning, fact-finding, and family vacation trips. I'll go with signature in both the House and Senate on Friday 8/12 at 10pm, and then a quick bolt out of town before Obama can veto it, leaving him really with no choice but to sign...

I have a gut feeling they're going to just raise the debt ceiling and the US won't default. If not done by tonight, I don't believe an agreement is going to be cut in time, or at least that it won't have enough time to go through the House and the Senate and the President.
ps. Why don't US citizens march to Capitol Hill? Screw getting a protest permit and screw different political ideologies. Show 'em that we're ONE nation and that all of this is absolutely unacceptable. Anyone down for that? With social media, it's easy to spread the word...

Astute analysis except for one thing. The time will be in the middle of the night eastern time so as to keep it from the AM papers in the east. That way they buy themselves time to think up ridiculous spin statements for the next days papers and by the time it is finally reported to the sleeping public it will be too late for anything else.

I'm sensing some cynicism towards our elected officials here.

I don't have a cynical bone in my body. I have 206.

Sorry it's not the push-button kind, andy: you actually have to type something in on this thread!

Deal gets done August 1st at 10:30pm, however it's so watered-down and makes marginal cuts & is part of a multi-step processs that within 48 hours both Moody's & Standard and Poor's react like we did default & declare a state of no faith in the American government and downgrade our credit ratings anyway.

Not bad! No profanity, and he lays it on both sides.
I'll stand by my prediction. And yes, andy and GATW, when someone solicits the opinions of members a group, that person is "polling." Even TTBF gets that.

Could someone explain to me why people continue to treat Moody's & SP like they are some holy grail? After all, weren't they were one of the main causes of the subprime crisis? Didn't these idiots continued to give top ratings to mortgage-backed securities months after the housing market started to collapse?

I don't have the answer for you - heck there's a guy I graduated UD with that couldn't even get accepted into UD's business school that works for S&P as a Managing Director and has input on what ratings should be....scary. But, as long as the stock market reacts on what Moody's or S&P does then I guess they are a "holy grail" as you refer. Just ask Greece & the EU....

I've always wondered the same thing. The ratings agencies don't know shit.
As others have said the deal will be done over the weekend so the idiots can go on the Sunday shows and talk about how they "saved us".

ps. Why don't US citizens march to Capitol Hill? Screw getting a protest permit and screw different political ideologies. Show 'em that we're ONE nation and that all of this is absolutely unacceptable. Anyone down for that? With social media, it's easy to spread the word...
I've relayed your radical muslim intentions to the proper authorities.

I saw right through his attempt also. Organize a huge patriotic rally on the mall, 10 suicide bombs go off at the same time.

The thing is, all Congress has to do is pass a bill that stated the interest on the debt had to be paid 1st, or for the WH to just say the same thing. That would mean zero chance of default. But instead the WH wants to play scare tactics.
There is enough $ coming in without raising the debt ceiling to pass the interest on the debt, the military, SS, medicare, and medicaid.

August 7, 3PM. They will lament their forgoing their vacation, July 4 break, and family time but they did it in the best interest of the country and that's all that matters - with a straight face.
