New census figures reveal that for the first time, the majority of babies born in the U.S. are now minorities - a change that could reshape the American social order.

Currently, non-Hispanic whites make up less than half of all children under 3. In 1990 that figure stood at 60%.

In 12 states - New York and New Jersey included - the white population among children younger than 5 is less than 50%, the figures showed.

Seven more states are expected to see a similar flip in "minority-majority" status in the next decade.

"We're moving toward an acknowledgment that we're living in a different world than the 1950s," said Laura Speer, coordinator of the Kids Count project in Baltimore. "It's clear the younger generation is very demographically different."

At the same time, whites make up the vast majority of older Americans, comprising 80% of people 65 or old. Whites also represent 73% of people ages 45-64.

The change has been most pronounced in states in the Southwest, where fast-growing Hispanic populations have turned the demographic on its head.

Again, another thing that makes American great. You watch the Olympics and you can almost tell the countries marching even without seeing a flag or a sign saying where they're from. On the whole, people from a country tend to look very similar to each other. However, when the US marches through, you see people of all shapes, sizes, and color. It's a beautiful thing.

Of course Ivy's right - in a century or so we'll all just be light brown and fairly monochrome. We need to find some different color people.

World population is forecast to peak and then taper off by 2050, IIRC.

And therein lies the problem. The problem is not that the racial makeup of the country is changing, it is that the culture and values are changing. Our antion is ebcoming less about freedom, exceptionalism, achievement, and rugged independence and more about government mandated equal outcomes. That is a VERY bad thing.

The racial and ethnic makeup of the nation is a total non-issue... it is all about culture.
