Texas Tells Feds: Shove Your Light Bulb Ban
State lawmakers have passed a bill that allows Texans to skirt federal efforts to promote more efficient light bulbs, which ultimately pushes the swirled, compact fluorescent bulbs over the 100-watt incandescent bulbs many grew up with.

The measure, sent to Gov. Rick Perry for consideration, lets any incandescent light bulb manufactured in Texas - and sold in that state - avoid the authority of the federal government or the repeal of the 2007 energy independence act that starts phasing out some incandescent light bulbs next year.

"Let there be light," state Rep. George Lavender, R-Texarkana, wrote on Facebook after the bill passed. "It will allow the continued manufacture and sale of incandescent light bulbs in Texas, even after the federal ban goes into effect. ... It's a good day for Texas."

The Natural Resources Defense Council, a New York-based environmental group, is calling on Perry to veto the bill.

I hope Perry signs it. The fed govt doesn't have any business telling people what type of light bulbs you are allowed to use, how much water their toilet can hold, what kind of gas mileage their vehicle has to get, that your gas for your vehicle has to have corn juice in it, etc, etc. Those are issues that should be decided by states.

Good for them. I always buy those, they work so much better than those other energy-efficient ones...you know..the ones that are supposed to last for 5 years and don't last 6 months.

If this works out, I hope Montana can bring the weapon bill back up. The one that says any firearm manufactured and sold in the state of Montana as long as it doesn't leave the state it avoids all of the federal BS.

-And cost about 5-10x as much as the 50-75 cent 100 watt ones.
-And give off crappy light.
-And don't work with dimmers.
-And don't work with 3 way outlets
-And contain mercury.

I don't have 2 many outlets for 100 watt bulbs- maybe 3-4. But I've already stocked up on about 2 doz of them in anticipation of the Jan 1, 2012 ban on new manufacturer.

The 60 watt I've got about 2 doz outlets for. I'll be stocking up several hundred of them before the US Jan 1 ban on manufacturing of 60 watt goes into effect. Or maybe I'll just move to Texas...

Clean up process for breaking an incandescent bulb: sweep or vac up, put in trash can.

Clean up process for breaking a CFL, as per the EPA:

"Before Cleanup

1. Have people and pets leave the room, and avoid the breakage area on the way out.

2. Open a window or door to the outdoors and leave the room for 5-10 minutes.

3. Shut off the central forced-air heating/air conditioning (H&AC) system, if you have one.

4. Collect materials you will need to clean up the broken bulb:
-Stiff paper or cardboard
-Sticky tape (e.g., duct tape)
-Damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes (for hard surfaces)
-Glass jar with a metal lid (such as a canning jar) or a sealable plastic bag(s)

Cleanup Steps for Hard Surfaces

1. Carefully scoop up glass fragments and powder using stiff paper or cardboard and place debris and paper/cardboard in a glass jar with a metal lid. If a glass jar is not available, use a sealable plastic bag. (NOTE: Since a plastic bag will not prevent the mercury vapor from escaping, remove the plastic bag(s) from the home after cleanup.)

2. Use sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up any remaining small glass fragments and powder. Place the used tape in the glass jar or plastic bag.

3. Wipe the area clean with damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes. Place the towels in the glass jar or plastic bag.

4. Vacuuming of hard surfaces during cleanup is not recommended unless broken glass remains after all other cleanup steps have been taken. [NOTE: It is possible that vacuuming could spread mercury-containing powder or mercury vapor, although available information on this problem is limited.] If vacuuming is needed to ensure removal of all broken glass, keep the following tips in mind:
-Keep a window or door to the outdoors open;
-Vacuum the area where the bulb was broken using the vacuum hose, if available; and
-Remove the vacuum bag (or empty and wipe the canister) and seal the bag/vacuum debris, and any materials used to clean the vacuum, in a plastic bag.

5. Promptly place all bulb debris and cleanup materials, including vacuum cleaner bags, outdoors in a trash container or protected area until materials can be disposed of properly.
-Check with your local or state government about disposal requirements in your area. Some states and communities require fluorescent bulbs (broken or unbroken) be taken to a local recycling center.

6. Wash your hands with soap and water after disposing of the jars or plastic bags containing bulb debris and cleanup materials.

7. Continue to air out the room where the bulb was broken and leave the H&AC system shut off, as practical, for several hours.

Cleanup Steps for Carpeting or Rugs

3. Vacuuming of carpeting or rugs during cleanup is not recommended unless broken glass remains after all other cleanup steps have been taken. [NOTE: It is possible that vacuuming could spread mercury-containing powder or mercury vapor, although available information on this problem is limited.] If vacuuming is needed to ensure removal of all broken glass, keep the following tips in mind:
-Keep a window or door to the outdoors open;
-Vacuum the area where the bulb was broken using the vacuum hose, if available, and

5. Wash your hands with soap and water after disposing of the jars or plastic bags containing bulb debris and cleanup materials.

6. Continue to air out the room where the bulb was broken and leave the H&AC system shut off, as practical, for several hours

Future Cleaning of Carpeting or Rugs: Air Out the Room During and After Vacuuming

1. The next several times you vacuum the rug or carpet, shut off the H&AC system if you have one, close the doors to other rooms, and open a window or door to the outside before vacuuming. Change the vacuum bag after each use in this area.

2. After vacuuming is completed, keep the H&AC system shut off and the window or door to the outside open, as practical, for several hours."

Texas......

I think they're embarrassed about asking for fed help because they had a few brush fires; now they want to remind us that they're independent, ruggedly individualistic, self-sufficient seekers of federal handouts.

They don't go up your ass, btw, they go in light sockets. :twocents:

I replaced about 80% of my light bulbs with these energy efficient ones when I bought my house a couple years ago. All of them are still going. And they give off great light (some of the bulbs I have are 'daylight', some are 'softlight'). The only thing I don't like about them is they don't work in dimmers...apparently they'll blow up an entire city block if you do that.

Anybody need any R-12 refrigerant??

If'n I was a little older, maybe I would have scarfed up on metal barrels of DDT prior to that ban, and I could help you poor fellas out with them tennis shoe sized cock-a-roaches you got hanging under your fridge down south there.

Better put up another storage facility to house all the horded 100 watt heat bulbs I'm planning on trucking in.

There is no security in this world boys, only opportunity.

Haven't seen them yet, but do they have ones that light up instantly even in cold weather spots? I have two in my garage (uninsulated garage) and one two outside lights, and in the winter it takes a good 2-3 minutes before they are at full illumination.

In general, I like the bulbs, but still trying to settle in on what gives the best light - I've tried a few varieties and in some cases the light isn't nearly as good as the inefficient models.

What brand? I'm happy with the energy efficient bulbs that my Co-op gave me 3 years ago (and i've yet to replace). However, I don't use them where I have dimmers.

CFL's aren't recommended for use in vibrating environments either, so what's the answer for garage door openers or ceiling fans?

Lanterns. Candles or the evil 60-watt bulb.

YOU decide!
