LOLO, Mont. (AP) — Former militia leader David Burgert has found a perfect location to carry on his private battle with law enforcement officers: a remote corner of the Rocky Mountains on the Montana-Idaho border that is heavily forested and lightly populated.

The hunt for Burgert, 47, moved into its fourth day Wednesday with no sign of the practiced survivalist whose mother said he slipped into paranoia after repeated run-ins with Montana law enforcement.

Court documents and interviews with law enforcement officials painted a picture of a well-armed "bully" who became convinced a decade ago that authorities were out to get him.

Burgert is being sought for attempted homicide and probation violations after authorities say he fired a handgun at two Missoula County sheriff's deputies during a confrontation Sunday about 25 miles west of Missoula.

I am not absolving him of what he has done now or in the past, but when he went to trial, and later prison, the government tried to put a bunch of other charges on him that were either dismissed or couldn't be verified on him and his "group".

Am I saying he is a nut, probably, but don't believe everything you read in the paper.

Where's expandos been lately? This sounds like something that he would do, doesn't it? Think about it, boththink the government is out to get them, both seem to have trouble fitting in with normal society, and for all we know expandos could be quite the outdoorman so that he can live off the land when he needs to avoid the government when "his time comes"

I think the cops are about 0-3 on successful man hunts in the wilderness around here, I can remember two of 'em where they had dog teams, swat teams, helicopters and the whole show out there thinking they had the villian(s) pinned down, only to find out they were nowhere in the area, in fact usually in town somewhere.

Most famous man hunt in our area was the Earl Durand episode. Also known as "The Tarzan Of The Tetons" Earl had used his supreme hunting skills to poach a couple elk for a couple starving families back in the depression days. Game was scarce then because everybody was hungry. He gunned down a game warden that came after him, then a couple sheriff's deputies that came after him later.

They thought they had him pinned down in the Beartooth Mountains when at the same time he was robbing the First National Bank in town, some 70 miles to the east of the Beartooths.

He was wounded while exiting the bank by a local boy with a 30-30, and then finished off execution style by the bank president at the time.

My Bro-In-Law now owns the historic bank building, which still shows bullet marks from the shootout that took place that day.
