Slaves' contributions debated 150 years later
RALEIGH — As America embarks on four years of Civil War commemorations, it revives an unsettling debate that lingers 150 years after the conflict: how to view the role of African-Americans in the Confederacy.
It arose last year when a Virginia textbook was yanked over protests that it inaccurately claimed thousands of blacks served as Confederate soldiers. More recently, a North Carolina community turned down an effort to erect a monument to 10 black men who served the Southern army and later collected Confederate pensions.
Gregory Perry, of Monroe, who learned recently that an ancestor was awarded pension for Confederate service, says it's hard to reconcile that fact with what he knows firsthand about being a black man in the South.
“I grew up in the era of Malcolm X and militancy and would never have considered something like this possible,” said Perry, 46, reflecting on the life of his great-great-grandfather, Aaron Perry.
“I wonder: If Aaron Perry knew the Union Army was coming to free him, why did he join the other side?”

Could've gotten it off a dead Yankee, I guess.... But, his ammo pouch says "US" on it...
Also, slave labor was used in the digging of trenches in and around Petersburg. Hard to know if that dead black guy was helping out on his own free will... or because massa was gonna whip him if he didn't.

We outfitted ourselves off the rotting corpses of disgusting yankee coercers out of necessity.
It matters not to me his status. Like his White comrade he is a HERO OF THE CAUSE!

The yankees moved away from our Men so quickly, so often, leaving us in possession of the field that it was just plain ol' Southern Hospitality to relieve guests of their coats, shoes, covers, rifles, ammo, cartridge box, hardtack, etc etc.

Yeah. I always thought the Confederacy was all about "honor" and other such quaint bullshit.
Stealing from dead people seems pretty low class to me.

Actually, your government that you're so proud of should have provided your soldiers with their own coats, shoes, covers, rifles, ammo, cartridge box, hardtack, etc. etc.....
Instead of feeding off dead Union soldiers like parasites.

THEY SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE. THEY GOT WHAT THEY DESERVED. I WISH IT HAD BEEN MORE!

Why does he have a better rifle than you? Oh. Because the South is too poor to properly arm their own troops. Poor fellers.

Damn. 4 years was all it took to restore order to Redneckistan?
Afghan dirt farmers are obviously of a superior pedigree than the typical Southron. They've fought off "the most powerful and industrial nation upon the earth" for almost a full decade now.
Maybe Southrons should learn a thing or two from superior races like Afghanis and Vietnamese before starting a little rebellion again.

We fought like Men and in the manner of civilized warfare and under the accepted laws of war of the time. When defeated instead of just dismissing the army to fight a guerilla war like those you mentioned General Lee said to General Edward Porter Alexander, of Washington, Georgia, "you young men may go to bushwacking but for me there is nothing to do but go see Genl Grant and accept responsibility for my actions". By his example he diverted a calamity on this country that would still be going on today like it is in Northern Ireland.

Haha, nice. Bobby Horton. A good friend of my family's. Gave me my first banjo lessons and was my inspiration to take up the instrument.
Sometime when I'm PWI I'll have to upload me playing "Rose of Alabama" for you.
