Eh - the real Germanic tribes didn't do that, the Germanic tribes were the ones that got pushed out of the way when the Eastern European and Asian tribes like the Huns and Goths and Visigoths and so on came rolling down from the steppes. That's like saying France beat Germany in World War II because the Americans and British came through France on their way to finishing off Germany.

Actually wasn't the area now know as Germany considered the heart of the Holy Roman Empire into the 1800's? They didn't harass and assist to the destruction of the roman empire, they became home to it. For a long, long time.

It was mostly German, using a mutually supporting (not always) relationship with the Vatican, and had an EXTREMELY small area, which grew smaller over time.
