CHICAGO -- The biggest question in Chicago's mayoral election Tuesday was whether former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel's momentum and money would carry him to an outright win or whether one of his rivals would garner enough votes to force a two-way runoff in April.

Preliminary results showed Emanuel with a commanding lead. With 75 percent of precincts reporting, Emanuel had more than 54 percent of the vote. Former Chicago schools president Gery Chico had 25 percent, City Clerk Miguel del Valle had 9 percent and former U.S. Sen. Carol Moseley Braun had 8.6 percent. CNN and WGN News have both called the race for Emanuel.

Seriously speaking, does that matter? So a different machine won - at the end of the day, does anything really change?

who cares. If things didnt change its because the people of Chicago today said they dont want it to... its their city and I'm sure they could care less what you or AZGriz think.

So will Rahm settle for this job? He's already been a Congressman. Does he want to be the Guv someday?

It was a serious question - why are people, like yourself, who don't live in Chicago, genuinely happy about this victory (just judging by the starting of the thread and the number of thumbs up)? What does it mean to you?

anyone else here ever met the guy? No.

anyone else ever work with the guy? No.

Speaking as the guy on the board who has done both - he's a hell of a guy. He's intense, drives others almost as hard as he drives himself and is a damned inspiring guy to be around.

More than that - he's one of those guys who you hate going up against - but when he's on your team, he's your favorite.

Besides - he and his brother are the basis for two of tv's best characters in the last 20 years.

BTW - Minneapolis/St. Paul is at a nice and lofty 700ft above sea level... I figure, we'll be the capitol of everything...

Who do you think was the machine's candidate?

This election was interesting for a number of reasons. One, there was no true machine candidate. Rahm and Chico both worked for Daley, they both have connections to the machine and they both have influential supporters. The presence of the Rahm and Chico on the ballot kept either from being the machine's candidate.

Two, they're calling it a post-racial election. In years past, Mosley-Braun would have ran away with the African American vote. That didn't happen for a number of reasons. MB kept shooting herself in the foot, giving African Americans little reason to have confidence in her ability to do the job. Rahm worked for both Clinton and Obama and that carried weight with African American voters (especially with Obama's implicit endorsement). Daley (and Harold Washington before him) did a great job of reaching out to and serving other racial constituencies so voters felt more comfortable voting based on merit rather than race.

Rahm isn't a great guy. He's an azzhole. He is extremely intelligent, gets results, etc. but he is still an azzhole. I would rather have an azzhole who can get the job done than a nice guy anyway. Chicago is in a financial quagmire, it will be interesting to see how Rahm plans to extricate the city from the mess. He has demonstrated a willingness not to tow the union line but how far will he go?

Is it a case of "meet the new boss, same as the old boss?"
