The North Koreans have fired dozens of artillery rounds on a civilian populated island.

South Korea fired back and deployed fighter jets. The President and his staff are in an emergency meeting in a bunker at the Presidential compound.

Not possible. We have quite a few Army and Air Force bases there and most of them are quite close to the DMZ.

North Korea exists only because China wishes to use it as a foil against the U.S.

Unless China says something, NK will continue to attack. Hope our troops in SK stay safe.

Is there any reason why NK is shelling SK civilians?

This.

China has been getting closer to the NorKors in recent months. Chinese pressure will be necessary to make Kim Jong-Il stand down.

Not to mention warships with Marines aboard.

I don't think US diplomacy has a whole lot to do with what North Korea does... no matter who the President is.

If we want to spin it though.... I'd say that pretty much anything North Korea has done over the last 15 years is Bill Clinton's fault.

a friend of mine who is over there right now in Yongin (about 30 miles from the dmz) was skyping with me today and she was saying that it's a lot of bluster from Kim Jong Il's kid who is set to take over and is "asserting himself" making a statement that "he's to be taken seriously" she says consensus among the locals (particularly the older ones) is that this will quiet down for a bit, then they'll do it again - and it'll go like that for a while until he's settled in.

interested to see if they are right...

"Obama: US Arrogance Cause of N Korean Attack"

BTW- what's the carbon footprint of all those artillery shells?

Serious question CID, what do you think happens in a war between North and South Korea if there is no outside intervention? I realize that this is not likely to happen, just curious.

My guess is that South Korea eventually wins but that there would be a huge loss of life.

Yes. Bloodbath, but a short one.

South Korea would be mopping up the last of North Korea's military capability within 4-5 months of the start of hostilities, but there is always the nuclear wild card to deal with, too. North Korea would certainly use them.

And I thought we were still suffering from the Taft era.

We'd have to hope that the North Korean military, when given to order to use nukes, would refuse. Unlikely though, besides, Kim would probably fire them himself.

Of course this is all irrelevant, I don't see anyway that a fight could escalate and not include us and China.
